Silent Hill: Downpour is...

...the biggest load of dog shit I have ever seen in my entire life. Seriously, I wasted good money on this piece of crap and right now I need a bottle scotch or something to forget about the 3 hours I wasted on this game. I opened up this thread just to notify all you Silent Hill lovers out there. Don't let your curiosity get the better of you. Gosh, this was a good waste of time and money.

Yeah, the reviews haven't been great. I guess a PC port is completely out of the question by now. I'd still like to play it just because it's Silent Hill, but no way I'm going to buy a console for that.

No you don't, and no it isn't!

This game is crap not just by Silent Hill standards, but by any standards known to a gamer. The most irritating thing about it is the "combat" which makes PS1 games look good in comparison. Just move along and pretend this game doesn't exist. I don't understand why Konami had to stop developing Silent Hill games themselves.

I'm liking it. Combat is meh (but I'm not having problems defeating enemies, anyway) and framerate is shaky if you don't play at 576p (?) but the atmosphere is very nice so far.

I don't understand why Konami had to stop developing Silent Hill games themselves.

Because sales were on a steady decline since the first game, and after the critical disappointment of SH4 (which was the fault of the higher ups that decided to transform an unrelated horror game into a SH game but without giving the team the extra time needed) they thought that certainly giving the franchise to western developers would magically raise sales.

You know, the same thing Capcom thinks (Resident Evil:ORC, DmC, Dead Rising 2).

I liked SH4 quite a bit. For whatever reason, Konami decided to disband Team Silent after that one and I never played anything else with Silent Hill in the title since. They look the same to me, only worse and fake somehow.

The series needs to be left alone or rebooted completely by another decent developer, a la Metroid Prime.

If you liked SH4 (I do too) you should give Downpour a try, IMO. The atmosphere is more in line with that game than with the first three games. Just be sure to lower the resolution, unless you like frame drops and screen tearing.
So far I'm liking it a lot despite some obvious flaws.

Aside from the awful combat, the game has a very slow and boring pace. Also, atmosphere wise, the game is similar to a teen horror movie.

What is awful about the Combat?

The SH series never shined in the combat department, though. All iterations that I've played have issues. Is it really that much worse in Downpour?

Compared to the first four games? Not really. The only annoyance is that melee weapons eventually break, you have no idea how damaged they are and you can carry only two with you (and the second one can be only a firearm). Still, weapons are scattered everywhere (rocks, sticks, fire pokers, axes...) so it's not really a problem.

In my opinion Silent Hill has sucked since Silent Hill 3. They are over-saturating the market with Silent Hill games. Releasing barely above average games is killing the series. I still think Silent Hill 2 was the best.

Melee weapons break just like Stanislao mentioned. But the other thing that makes it really annoying is that most enemies use some sort of weird hit and run tactic. You have to be very precise to block and hit them at the right moment. Keep in mind that some enemies take forever to die. Check out youtube and search for videos of an enemy called "Weeping Bat" and you'll see what I mean. I dunno dudes. Maybe I'm just being a bitch. Some people even praised the combat because they believed it was challenging.

It sounds like you're being a bitch, but I wasn't expecting the game to be good anyway. Actually, your complaint about slow pace makes me more hopeful, since the videos I've seen make it look too "in your face".
