Silent Hill: Downpour is...

ive only ever played whichever one your rumaging around a big school i think. classrooms and stuff.
i remember me and a friend nearly pissed ourselves w that game.

since then i havent been very eager finding it, mostly assuming its a console-exclusive thing, but also cus im a sissy when it comes to spooky games after dark :(

That was the very first game. I remember me and a friend always played it in the dark and back then it was absolutely frightening, since it was the first game that went with that type of horror. A masterpiece.

It sounds like you're being a bitch, but I wasn't expecting the game to be good anyway. Actually, your complaint about slow pace makes me more hopeful, since the videos I've seen make it look too "in your face".

Who are you going to listen to? Me or TheIdiot?

That describes pretty much all of them

I loved the first four but the series was destined to fail after a few games anyways. There's only so many horror movies and books you can reference before you find yourself with nothing left and trying to pass off shallow gimmicks as something new

I'm liking it. Combat is meh (but I'm not having problems defeating enemies, anyway) and framerate is shaky if you don't play at 576p (?) but the atmosphere is very nice so far.

I don't understand why Konami had to stop developing Silent Hill games themselves.

Because sales were on a steady decline since the first game, and after the critical disappointment of SH4 (which was the fault of the higher ups that decided to transform an unrelated horror game into a SH game but without giving the team the extra time needed) they thought that certainly giving the franchise to western developers would magically raise sales.

You know, the same thing Capcom thinks (Resident Evil:ORC, DmC, Dead Rising 2).

Yeah, but at least for Capcom it has worked out on rare occasions. DR2 was pretty good (not great). Bionic Commando: Rearmed 1 was good.

However DR2 still could have been better. And BC:R was a straight remake, when Grin tried to do their own game with BC it was awful since they couldn't rely on the strong design template of another game.

If Ninja Gaiden 3 is any indication, DmC is going to suuuuuuuuck.

I honestly dunno why Capcom didn't hand the keys over to Platinum Games, who not only knows how to make good action games but would treat the franchise with care since they are made up of most of the team who originally created DMC. :/

Homecoming is trash, as far as I'm concerned. Downpour has its flaws but it's much better. I liked it a lot, even though it obviously isn't comparable in any way with the first three. Good atmosphere, but it's rarely scary (there are some parts where you are in complete darkness that are terrifying but strangely they are very very few and short). There are some problem with the pacing; before you reach Silent Hill stuff happens but the main story is "put on hold" (you just have the vague objective of reaching the town and then flee), and once you reach SH the game starts throwing side quests at you that can distract you from the plot. Eh.
Don't play on Hard, some sections are very annoying.

Quality is a secondary concern for them, relatively speaking. Capcom wants to westernize some of their IPs because they think the western "touch and feel" resonates better with western audiences (=more sales). And since Platinum Games isn't western...

Compared to Homecoming, it's a worthy game. It doesn't stack up to the first 3 or even 4 IMO, but it's not bad at all. Decent enough for a rental.

I'm watching the "Two Best Friends" play through of Downpour and the game just doesn't appeal to me. The story seems decent, especially since it doesn't revolve around the whole Cult thing and more along the lines of Silent Hill being a town that makes people live out their deepest fears and regrets.

on the subject of the HD collection: I've heard how shitty they are and IF they do release the patches, maybe I'll decide to buy it, until then I'm contemplating just buying the PS2 version of SH2.
