Milosevic found dead in his cell

Mr Milosevic's health had delayed his trial
Former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has died in the detention centre at The Hague tribunal.
The tribunal said he had been found dead in his cell on Saturday morning. The cause of death is not yet clear.

Mr Milosevic, 64, has been on trial at the UN war crimes tribunal for genocide and other war crimes since 2001.

The tribunal last month rejected a request by Mr Milosevic to go to Russia for medical treatment. He had high blood pressure and a heart condition.

The tribunal has ordered an inquiry into the death.

"Milosevic was found lifeless on his bed in his cell at the United Nations detention unit," the tribunal said in a statement.

"The guard immediately alerted the detention unit officer in command and the medical officer. The latter confirmed that Slobodan Milosevic was dead."

Mr Milosevic faced charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity for his alleged central role in the wars in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo during the 1990s.

He also faced genocide charges over the 1992-95 Bosnia war, in which 200,000 people died.

Mr Milosevic was in office for 13 years until 2000.

I'd like to say justice will be served with him going to hell now - but since he comes from the Balkans, it'll probably be a step up for him.
 
His death could provoke Serbian nationalism and cause further implications to the Kossovo issue. Other than that, good riddance.

Upset, because the greatest war criminal since Hitler has eluded due penance through the pardon of premature natural death.

Upset, because instead of being subject to condemnation and uncompromising punishment for his countless and monstrous atrocities, he achieved martyrdom and ensured that his legacy will continue to burden the peoples of former Yugoslavia and their relations for generations to come.

Slobodan Milosevic was a brutal, cold-hearted murderer who, under the guise of protecting the rights of Serbs and preserving stability and integrity of the phantomic Yugoslavia, set in motion four genocidal wars of expansion with the purpose of subjugating and eradicating all non-Serbian ethnic groups on its territory. He is thus directly responsible for deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and exodus of millions. He masterminded and orchestrated the greatest war crimes seen in Europe since World War II, right under the eyes of the civilized world and with the silent backing - even encouragement - of western powers.

Milosevic was also a tyrant who attained political power through violence and usurpation of authority and retained it by means of ruthless oppression. He persecuted and assassinated his political opponents and dissidents, forcefully shut down independent media and brutally suppressed peaceful demonstrations. Under his regime Serbia's economy was utterly devastated, her society destroyed, her ethical values eroded, her people impoverished and morally ruined and every aspect of her life dominated by a complex network of criminal, military and intelligence cabals. The broken, demoralized, pauperized and marginalized Serbia is Milosevic's grim legacy to his people and the ultimate result of his maniacal and destructive politics.

Milosevic was an inhuman monster, undeserving of pity, compassion or mercy. He destroyed lives of millions of people and utterly devastated Balkans. His shadow looms over my life to this day and until the day I die will I continue to regret the fact that he never properly suffered for his dark deeds. May he rot in Hell.
 
Milosevic was not the greatest war criminal since Hitler.

But the man was a monster, and he should have hanged for his crimes years ago. Damn the Hauge.

That he does. And I must say, you have every right to claim it: not only have I never even visited the Balkans, but I was too young to remember anything but the tail end of the wars. You, on the other hand....

Well, I can't claim I experienced the worst of the wars either. Not by a long shot. Several weeks of living in a cornered town, followed by a hazardous flight to Zagreb and starting anew there doesn't even compare to the suffering of, for example, people of Vukovar, Sarajevo or Srebrenica, who lived under siege and in constant fear for months, even years, and every day saw their friends and family members get killed. Nonetheless, the events of 1991 and afterwards threw my life and lives of my family into turmoil and I honestly can't even begin to guess where we would now be had they not transpired at all.

On topic, I don't really see how 'earhtly justice' would have been that much better. Sure that he 'got away' with his crimes, but the dude's dead, what more can you ask? I guess that would be for him to have suffered more. It's like how Hitler shot himself in the bunker - "oh noes, we didn't get to trial and punish him for being a villain!1" The whole thing with death is that it gets you off all your hooks, and everyone should have the right to die (even though Milosevic didn't do it on purpose).

That said, I myself was never up to date with Milosovic when he was in business nor affected by his crimes. I understand of course if those who were feel stronger about it, and would have liked to see him convicted and punished, as I would have.

Oh, and since the man deserves no reverence, let me just say that literal English translation of his name (Slobodan Milosevic) is - Freeman Gentlefuck. :lol:

I'd rather have slow and 'ridiculous' than end up with an embarrassment like the Saddam trial.

Plus, I don't see how Den Haag is responsible for his hart condition.
