So what happened to the cockroaches??

I was just curious, with all the mutated critters in fallout 1&2, why are there no mutated cockroaches. They should have survived the war, the fallout and anything else you could throw at them. I remember a movie "Damnnation Alley", there were cockroaches all over the place. Plus they had super hard shells. Could you imagine if they mutated like the Rad scorpians. Damn that would be a blast. Plus those critters are fast movers too.
 
The cockroaches are there, but you can't see them in the 640x480 resolution. Also, it's "scorpions".

An alternative explanation: They're all over at DAC (I kid, I kid)
 
I do agree that it was a missed chance, even if they'd used them as a Rat-esque critter (ie. Shite) it would have fit the generic PA mould slightly better.

Rats do seem to have stood in good stead though, whereas 'roaches are somewhat lacking to me, bereft of any real human element.
 
I remember watching Damnation Alley and thinking to myself, "Why didn't Fallout have cockroaches?" Well the answer is this. The cockroaches evolved into Deathclaws.....wait a minute...that's not right..... :?
 
They just forget about the dang cockroaches.

Anyways, it is logical to assume that if the cockroaches can survive radiation better than any other animal or even insect, they have also been able to avoid mutation since radiation has no effect on them.

So they are there, only that they are irrelevant for the story.
 
Ants fit the retro sci-fi theme better, no doubt someone will educate me but I can't think of any 50's B movies that had mutant cockroaches.

When was it first speculated that cockroaches would survive a nuclear war anyway? Before or after the 50's?

Not many that I could even find outside what I know, and they aren't involving post-nuclear cockroaches.

Marvel has a number of cockroach-related stories with their characters, one notably She-Hulk in the 80's, but none I could find around the 50's.

I believe that they were one of the studies at the Nevada Test Site, and the later findings were inspirations for a new wave of 50's-esque cheesy mutant attacks, in movies like Squirm and other 70's sci-fi flicks. Cockroaches do fit into Fallout, but only as a "bugs that get bigger with radiation" like THEM!
 
Alot of anti-FoT sentiment going on here..

I fail to see how it was a bad game. Sure, it didn't have the same feel as the first two, but still, it's one of the best rpg's out there..

I'm never saying it is a bad game. I love FoT. But I wouldn't wanna call it one of the Fallout rpg games. I mean, the way I see it rpg-ing has a maximum value, and Fallout and Fallout 2 have a level of rpg that doubles that value... FoT doesn't. It's a great tactical game, personally I love sneaking up on a Super Mutie with that melee thing that looks like they chopped of Wolverine's hand and made a glove out of it, and then stab him in the eyes without being noticed, only to grab your Rocket Launcher and blow up the Super Mutie that's sitting 10 meters next to him...
 
But I wouldn't wanna call it one of the Fallout rpg games.

You can't call it an RPG because it is not an RPG. Hell, they didn't even tried to market it as one. On the logo it clearly says: A Post Nuclear Tactical Combat Game. Apparently, Stock missed that part.

Also, not only it's not an RPG, it's also not Fallout. End of story.
