Sony Playstation 3 to cost Arm AND Leg.

Surprised no one has posted anything about it yet. Sony had their pre-E3 press conference yesterday and announced most of the information for the Playstation 3.

As most of you know, the system will support blue ray discs. It also offers a basic online service that includes an iTune style music download system and what sounded like a system to purchase playstation games to download to the PSP.

The games all looked shiny and the controller, in an ode to Nintendo, was redesigned to have some motion sensitivity.

The kicker of course is the price tag. Americans are looking at $499 for a version with a 20 GB hard drive, $599 for a version with a 60GB hard drive. In Japan, the 20GB will be 59,800 yen, the 60GB will be sold at whatever price retailers want. And Europe, getting the shaft as usual, is looking at 499 euros and 599 euros respectively.

What do you guys think of that (besides the usual consoles suck, blehhh!)?

Consoles are hilarious to watch. You can predict their next moves so easily.

Nintendo: We've just invented a new feature! This one won't be useless! We might even include it's function in more than one game.
Sony: We have it too! We so didn't rip it off from nintendo...
Xbox: Look! Halo!
Sony: We're releasing our console soon, and even three whole games at launch. The obligatory rushed JRPG, car racer, and shitty kid platformer! But it'll also be kinda backward compatible.
Xbox: Uhhh... concidence, we have one of our best sellers or a console ready to launch that same week!
Nintendo: We're preparing a line up of games already for the new system, expect all your classic Nintendo lineups, raped into new genres and with all backstories ignored and filled with inconsistancies!

It's only $100 more than the 360 with a hard drive though. It's expensive and I definitely won't be buying one, but I don't think that the price will stop any console fanboys from lining up to get one.

You're certainly right. I asked my friend across the hall who has just about every JRPG ever created and he just shrugged and said oh well, it'll just cost him a little more.

And PhredBean, well put! I had to chuckle a few times reading that :).

weren't consoles supposed to be cheap-ish & rip you off on the price of the games, rather than the hardware?

now they wanna do both? :)

The only positive use of ps3 that I can see,is as a Blu-ray movie player.Blue ray players will propably cost 1000$ plus,so getting a ps3 with only 500$ doesn't sound that bad.

Not suprising at all Bloodlust, it's much the same as how Sony had marketed the PS2. It's even less suprising when you've watched the huge hand Sony has had in the past in the development and promotion of Blu-ray technology.

I found this article rather amusing. MS wants to launch a HD DVD drive for Xbox 360... but states outright if it doesn't work they can always jump on the Blu-ray bandwagon and release a drive for that too. Here's the gem right here.
However, he suggested that whatever the outcome of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray war, the Xbox 360 can adopt the dominant format since its uses an external drive. He also suggested that it's a weak point for PlayStation 3, saying Sony's system is stuck with Blu-ray.

while a see sony's argument that it's a cheap blue ray player... are blue ray discs very popular yet? I just don't see a reason to buy blue ray discs when I feel like things are fine with DVDs... certainly not 500-1000 dollars for them :-\.

Knowing the clout of Sony, they will undoubtedly be putting every effort into making Blu Ray the standard. The fallout if it failed, though...

The upgrade relative to DVDs is to me so minor that I will wait and see until it is decided.

they're not readily available, nor the HD DVD counterparts.

they're still mucking around with the blu ray standards even.

The HD DVDs are very much available in the states and Japan, although in small numbers.
yeah, like releasing 1000 ultra high end ATI graphics worldwide have made it 'readily available' in the past right?

the japs get everything first, thats normal, but the rest? a few samples doesnt make readily available, which is what i said right?

Well i was talking about the movies released, wich aren't much, but can be easily bought online and in many retailers... The players are indeed not enough by now, if what i'm hearing is right.

I'm thinking of buying one eventually. The games have better graphics than the 360, anyway, and most 360 games get ported to PC eventually.

Woah, those truly are some heavy duty pricetags.

I had tought of purchasing a ps3, mainly becouse of MGS4. Ain't so sure anymore. What a shame.
