Couldn't wait anymore for the RP1.3. so I started a new game with 1.2. =)
Anyway it just came to my mind that the spear has a range of 2 but if the enemy is 2 hexes away the chance to hit is lower than if you are next to it. Why?
I think you should get a bonus if using the spear and managing to keep out of the way and penalty if the enemy is too close. After all the spear is not so agile to use up close than a knife for example.


Like with the scoped hunting rifle. It has lower chance to hit if the enemy is too close but more accurate if enemy is far away.

What would it take to make such a modification?
 
One would argue that by standing further away from the enemy, u also give him more time to react to any of ur moves/attacks, hence the decreased chance of hitting ;)

Could be argued both ways
 
Having used spears in European medieval combat reenactment myself, I have to say that spears should indeed be more like scoped hunting rifles.

The first step in taking out a spearman is to pass the point. Spears are so terrible in close combat that a good spearman will always have a backup weapon (a knife) with him.

Once you're past the point, the spear becomes a passive weapon, like a shield. For more realistic close combat, spears should be able to interrupt when someone tries to get close, but that kind of engine hacking is out of the question.
