Just a note about the XP Blackout bug. Instead of always unintalling.reinstalling drivers, you could simply create a profile (name it "Fallout"). Boot in it then disable the video drivers.

Once you're done playing simply boot the computer and return to the default profile. It's a bit more complicated to setup but in the long run it's much easyer to manage.

If anyone enquires how to setup a profile, just post here and I'll write a quick walkthrough of the steps to follow.

just a little note about the xp error...

if you go into your pipboy it gets rid of all the black... just for us who are too lazy to change our system configurations each time we play

Insufficient Disk Space Error
------------------
When you get that message it's either:
A. You are really running low on diskspace and should free up some, or
B. Your config files misguide you.

The following solution is for the latter and was proven to work for both FO1 and FO2.

In your Fallout directory find the fallout.cfg file and open it with Notepad.
Note: Your file may look slightly different from the one listed below.

[system] <-----look under this paragraph
art_cache_size=130
cdlock=C:\Programs\mIRC\download\cdlock.dat
color_cycling=1
critter_dat=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\data
cycle_speed_factor=1
executable=game
free_space=20480 <---------- find this line and change the value to 0(zero) hashing=1
interrupt_walk=1 language=english master_dat=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\master.dat
master_patches=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\data
scroll_lock=0
splash=3
times_run=5

I am experiencing this problem at the moment but when I look in fallout2.cgf the line you indicated ("free_space=20480") isn't there. Infact there is only about half the information in the .cgf that the FAQ says there should be, can you think of any reason this might be?

Well, how about giving people a bit more information than that?

And people wonder why they get banned when they don't bother to read the stickied posts....

Well, I don't really see what extra information I can give. I had a problem, asked about it, was directed here. I noted that the solution to the problem didn't work with me an enquirued further.

Maybe I should recap.

I have installed Fallout 2 onto my computer, the installaton was successful.
After trying to run the game I got an error message telling me there is not enough disk space to run the game despite there being ample disk space, more than the 20.0 mb the error message tells me I need to run the game.
As your FAQ instructed I opened the fallout2.cgf file, here are the contents;

[sound]
music_path1=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data\sound\music\
music_path2=D:\data\sound\music\

[system]
cdlock=D:\cdlock.dat
critter_dat=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data
master_dat=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\master.dat
master_patches=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data
art_cache_size=261

Whereas your FAQ says the cfg file should consist of the following;

[system] <-----look under this paragraph
art_cache_size=130
cdlock=C:\Programs\mIRC\download\cdlock.dat
color_cycling=1
critter_dat=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\critter.dat
critter_patches=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\data
cycle_speed_factor=1
executable=game
free_space=20480
hashing=1
interrupt_walk=1 language=english master_dat=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\master.dat
master_patches=C:\Games\BlackIsle\Fallout2eng\data
scroll_lock=0
splash=3
times_run=5

The "free_space=20480" is the line I am instructed to edit but, obviously I cannot edit it if it is not there.
Is there any reason why my fallout2.cfg file is missing that line? Is there anyway I can get around it?

I apologise for not reading the sticky post, it was my own fault and can accept that. But I would also like some assistance if you would be so kind as to provide it, please.

:)

<snap>

You can add that line. Anywhere in the [system] section.

*blinks* Apparently you need to be taught how to edit a config file with simple instructions involved that couldn't be made any simpler. How about trying the obvious first?

Oh, I'm sorry. I missed the part in those simple instructions where it said I could merely add the line. *shakes head*

Thanks for the assist, Dude-Obj. Nice to actually get some constructive advice...

No, that implies common sense that if that config file's lines should read that way, maybe you should add the line so it DOES read that way. Back to Sesame Street, kid, where one thing does or doesn't look like the rest in the group. Well, if the line should be there, and yours doesn't have it, don't blame me because you're too stupid to figure out the simplest of concepts.

You were told to read the stickies, which I can tell that you haven't done so, yet you're trying to give me attitude, kid. Now if your problem turns out to be one of those that are OS-related, I'm just going to Vat your posts, ban you, and then you can go sulk off to another Fallout site along with the few other retards who couldn't bother to understand simple fucking English, cop an attitude, and then try to get an answer there.

Oh for fuck's sake.

The guy told me to the read the stickies, I looked in this thread and found the trouble shooter I was looking for, it didn't make sense to me so I asked about it.

I'm so sorry for all this fucking irreprable damage I've caused. I'm sorry I'm not fluent in editing config files, I guess we can't all be as fucking perfectas you can we.

I came on here and have gotten nothing but elitist bullshit, especially from you. You obviously have some kind of authority issues. Does it make you feel like a big man, telling people off for not reading stickies?
Does it make you feel tough and respected?
Because all you've proven is what an utter prick you are.

Please do ban me because I would not want to have an account on a board with the likes of you. I will "sulk off" to another fallout site, one where the basics of human co-existence have been thoroughly mastered.
You probably don't give a shit what I think, no more than I care what you do. But if people like you represent this board as a whole then you are giving the place a very bad image.

That doesn't help when you are the one without any sense of courtesy and netiquette, not to mention your inability to do what the fuck you're told. You were told to read the stickies, and given a good example, then you kept on spamming around without care to the other threads in this forum, and then gave attitude about it.

Apparently, you are Special, too, so you get the apropos rank. Either show that you deserve to be treated as human, or be stepped on like the bipedal cockroach that you are.

Fallout 1 crashing when going down elevator to level3 of Cathedral.

Disable, or stop process named "dwwin.exe".

/edit: It seems as though my computer doesn't show this program as a process anymore, so I had to disable error reporting through the control panel.

Also, if your copy is pirated from a P2P program, and has some problems installing, or random crashes at strange times, it may have been the copy I sabotaged, and cannot be fixed. Enjoy. :D

its a real old computer, something like 133mHz processor with what ever built in video card came with the computer... im not sure what or how to find out what. ill check other threads for similar graphics issues.

EDIT:oh and im using direct X 9

Well running XP on a 133Mhz CPU doesn't make much sense. You'll have an overall better experience with everything using Win98SE.

I'm surprised you can even get a 133 mhz running winXP with DX 9.

You've got a great rig to run Fallout, just install Windows 95 - 98SE and everything should be fine.

truth be told i got this machine secondhand for free, so im not gonna complain about it comming with xp though it does go slow and yeah i know xp is no good on a 133mHz processor.

wheni get the funds for a proper machine, ill keep this one strictly for old games, mainly falout. and ill get win98 or 98SE for it too.

and its fallout 1, i thought i posted that in the original post.
ive deleted all my fallout files and am going to start over because something i did messed up the display settings so bad that when i started up it loaded in 480x600 res and 4 bit color and wouldnt give me the options to change it. hopefully ive got all that fixed, and if fallout still has its problems, ill try what you said roshambo, thanks!

Well, as long as it's a working solution to a possible problem, I can merge it with the Troubleshooting sticky. Has it worked in practice or do you just figure it would?
