Recommend anything from DOS to PS2 or whatever, as long as it's a Strategy/Tactics game. CRPGs and simulations are counted.

Myth & Myth 2 [by Bungie Studios]

*This series was conceptually based on the Black Company, from the series of books by Glen Cook.
(With the internal premise of combat like you see it in the film Braveheart.)

You can't go wrong with the classics when trying a Strategy game, which is Age of Empires, specifically the 2nd one especially since it got an HD remaster on Steam and all of its expansions. I feel like the 1st game doesn't age well, except for the memes, and it got a remaster but since it's exclusively released on Win 10 store, fuck that shit IMO. The 3rd game is a mixed bag; on one hand, I liked most of the improvements, especially the cosmetic one where units no longer hit a building with a sword to set it on fire but rather torch them down; on the other hand, it felt... janky? Clunky? It just doesn't feel right even after I got used to it back during my early teens. Also, one thing I noticed is that the 3rd game's performance on the PCs I played on isn't smooth, so there's also that.

If you want to experience a mythology-induced strategy game, there's Age of Mythology. If you want Sci-fi, go for Dune 2000. Medieval Crusade-era? Stronghold: Crusader. For D&D-esque fantasy strategy, you can't go wrong with Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, The Frozen Throne.

These are the games I've played, so I can't comment how the other strategy games of corresponding genre compares to them, like Starcraft and Command&Conquer.

some of my all-time favorites:

Alpha Centauri (SMAC)
Deadlock: Planetary Conquest
MissionForce: Cyberstorm -- hardcore difficulty, be prepared for that
Eador: Genesis
Distant Worlds -- real-time, incredible depth and complexity though
Armageddon Empires -- procedurally generated maps and events, no campaign
Jagged Alliance 2 (with 1.13 modification)

edit:
Spellcross -- excellent old Slovak tactical game with decent strategic layer

AoE 2 is my childhood and what got me into PC gaming.
Agree about AoE 3, something about it felt very clunky. Might be the 3D and the engine in general I guess?

The original Homeworld, and Homeworld:Cataclysm*.
(Not the remasters, because they implemented them both in the Homeworld 2 engine.)

Cataclysm was sadly renamed to Emergience, presumably out of fear of Activision/Blizzard, even though HW:Cataclysm used the name first. Shameful. Great games!

*Of course the Remastered version looks visually superb. The HW remastered gameplay is good, but hampered from the original.
But the voice work is superior in the original.
