Taiwan Intervention

Executioner

It Wandered In From the Wastes
If Taiwan should ever declare itself to be a completely independent nation, should the US protect them from an aggressive Chinese response?

Soon, a referendum will ask voters to decide on setting up anti-missile equipment and opening a dialogue with China to improve relations.

I say yes. Of course, because I'm living in Taiwan at the moment, I'm a little biased... :)

But seriously, letting a democratic country be attacked for having its people vote to be considered something that it really has been for 50 years (an independant nation) is something that I think the US would not and should not let happen.

Should the US protect them from an aggressive Chinese response?

Well, they should. I don't know if they would though.
The US has some strange priorities.

The US does have a defense pact with Taiwan, and lots of Southeast Asia (think NATO) plus it has huge economic interests in the island. Of course China would be suicidal if it ever tried to invade, American air and sea power could sink and shoot down anything short of an ICBM they tried to send across the strait.

But even without a defense pact or economic interests I think the US has a moral obligation to defend political freedom in Taiwan.

Seeing as the US has a history for getting into world problems they would intervine in no time. The only problem with fighting china is they greatly outnumber the US army. The US is slightly more up to date though but still many lives would be lost in that battle.

Do I think that Taiwan has the right to be completely independent?
Hell yes!
Do I think the Americans would intervene?
Probably.
You have to realize this: there are only two things on the face of this earth that managed to stop the Russian expansion: the ocean and the Chinese. Think about it...

I doubt it would ever come to blows between China and the US but if it did........ And china launched even one nuke they would get at the vary least 10 sent their way. and you can believe that we'd be trying like hell to shoot that nuke out of the sky.

I know that the chinese are kind of new to the intercontinental missile thing, but I don't think it's worth the risk. I like playing FO, I don't want to live it... and one would be enough to start the launch bonanza. Just think of the fact that China's neighbors would be affected, and are likely to retaliate in some way.

Yes, one launched nuke would start a chain reaction of countrys attacking each other because of secret pacts and alliances. Kind of like what happened in WW1 and WW2.

I would favor intervention because it would be the right thing to do. Mainland China is pretty much the real rebellious collection of provinces. After all, the rightful government of China was pushed out to Taiwan.

Me = not a Commie

I just hope our missile defenses are much improved and in-place before we would have to intervene.

Don't get me wrong but i DOUBT that the usa would do anything to prevent the invasion of Taiwan... maybe some paramilitary help, but no troops. It is easy to attack an isolated country, with military equiqment that's propably from the 70's or so, but attacking a world power like china is a different thing:
First: the USA would not get anything from this war
Secound: The USA could lose (remeber, there are no winners at a nuclear war)
third: It would be stupid to intervine ( <- ok that one's weak, but I think you get my point)

After all, the rightful government of China was pushed out to Taiwan.
There was(and is) no such thing as the "rightful" government of any counrty. And besides that, in China, it was a case of two different rebellious groups(nationalists and communists) pitched against eachother after the fall of the previous(monarchal) government. So neither of those groups could hope to have any claim to be the "rightful" government of China.

Furthermore, if there was such a thing as the rightful government, then we'd all have to be living under despotism, or there would be no governments to begin with. ;)

But, besides that, I don't think it will ever come to that. The Chinese will realise that attacking Taiwan would be a stupid thing to do, since it would anger most of the world. They're not about to risk their entire country over some silly island in the pacific.

Our interests in China probably outnumber our interests in Taiwan at this point, so I sincerely doubt we would get involved in any conflict beyond diplomacy.

First: the USA would not get anything from this war
They would gain a good economically healthy ally, and they would deliver a blow to communist China.

The USA could lose (remeber, there are no winners at a nuclear war)
This is true, but:
China won't use nuclear missiles, because the USA would pwn them, and the USA won't use them, because that'd be devastating to their international position. Still MAD.

It would be stupid to intervine
That's no argument. That's a statement, the above two are arguments for that statement. Tsk. ;)

Even though you make a good point here...I'm never wrong, so I must be right. 8)

Oh yes! I just love it when somebody can back up his point of view with such strong arguments!
And I think that George Double Idiot Bush would jump head first into this, just so that he can make the world safe for democracy, and mom's apple pie.

I hope you are kidding. The US stopped all conflicts with the red menace back in the 70's. We have bigger enemies right now.

Hey, I'm reasoning from Bush's point of view, not my own.
