The dead Vault Dweller...

In the first Fallout, when you exit your Vault for the first time, right at the doorstep is a rotting corpse of another Vault dweller with a pistol.

Who the hell is this guy? How did he get there? Why is he dead? Why does he have a pistol? Am I missing something?

Anyone care to answer?

It's Ed. Ed is dead.

I have an idea. Remember, in the manual Overseer told you that they spent a lot of equipment while trying to contact the outside world. I suppose this guy was one of these unfortunate explorers. It doesn't say whether he was looking for waterchip too, but since you are not the first one to go looking for it (remember the ghoul in The Followers' basement?), it's in the realm of possibility.

As for being dead... I guess the rats overwhelmed him, and his Small-Guns skill was below average
