"The game was rigged from the start"

I like Benny's opening narration, but I'm not sure I follow what he's talking about (or why, really). What does the above line, in particular, mean? Is it referring to the fact
[spoiler:2d94734ac5]that through Yes Man he knew about the Chip and which courier had it and the courier's route?[/spoiler:2d94734ac5]

Doesn't feel like the line makes a lot of sense, to me.

Discuss!

You are not the only BN who is still confused about that line.

[spoiler:994d4aef6b]I am also curious about the guy before the Courier who declined the job when he saw that the Courier was next on the list to deliver the Platinum Chip.[/spoiler:994d4aef6b]

DLC, DLC, DLC.

Also, it's really just something gambling related to say to someone before you shoot them.

If it weren't set in Vegas he'd have probably said something "Hasta La Vista" or "Sucks to be you".

Another possibility is that the line is just consistent with the constant casino-speak Benny talks in, simply using that metaphor to express that the Courier - or whatever generic 6th courier was going to make that delivery - was always going to be ambushed.

[spoiler:05c6b72132]So Yes Man was a former House securitron which had been damaged and reprogrammed, and I suppose that through the recovered data there was information regarding the packages and their delivery routes, right?

The mystery of the other courier who refused the delivery before the PC still stumps me though...what was so significant about the Courier's name?

How about this for crazy, then? The Courier is Joshua Graham...

Although of course that goes out the window when playing as a female, and the fact that Caesar doesn't make any reference to you being you when meeting him, even talking about him in your presence. Unless there was massive facial reconstruction and a bit of amnesia in there... which there was. But you did survive two shots to the head and, through the basic mechanics of video games, are unkillable. But yeah, rather far fetched.[/spoiler:05c6b72132]

I took it to mean that The Couriers luck had run out. No real deep dark mystery behind it, just that he was fucked from the start just by being the one to carry the chip.

I rather liked that scene though, It was a pretty cool way to start the game.

Yeah, I think the line BN's referring to shouldn't be much of a mystery.

The thing Dutch Ghost is talking about though, I never found referenced again. I do very much wonder what that's all about. An unfinished plotline?

I would take it to mean that he thought he was just doing a simple delivery, but the truth was he was just a pawn. House had planned elaborately for the platinum chip to be delivered, going so far to hire fake couriers and mercenaries to clear the surrounding area. Benny was already plotting to foil House and steal the chip for himself.

The game is "deliver the package", and as far as the courier knows its go from point A to point B, but the game is "rigged".

It could also mean that he was screwed no matter what happened the moment he got the platinum chip.

Maybe the Ulysses companion they had to remove that apparently had a role in the story?

Perhaps, but only if you embrace the explanation that it's just a throw-away line. Which it seems to be. That's a bit cheap. I heard the line in the beginning of the game, expected it to refer to some deeply intelligent conspiracy, but then I ran into Benny, smooshed his face with my fists, and was done with it.

In other words, it's an intro written to sound cool, but not actually have any meaning in the overall narrative. That's cheap.

It's pretty clear that the line references how Benny "rigged the [delivery] game from the start" and knew exactly which courier would be in possession of the Platinum Chip. The Courier him/herself did not know what he/she was transporting nor its value, believing it to be just another delivery job, but there was much more at play as you learn from House, Benny, and Yes Man.

There's probably a deeper meaning to it, too, because House specifically keyed in on you and because the former courier saw your name and forwarded the job to you. Apparently you are more important than just a mere courier. We'll probably be learning more about this in the near future.

Another thing that makes me wonder is how you survived. I think that Victor was sent by House to look for the chip, to scout around, and it's a coincidence that you were still alive when he was checking you for the chip.

And some real life examples. Same with knife in the head, etc. It's pretty dangerous and most people wouldn't make it, but there are some examples, where people survived it.

Head shots can often be survivable, be it in a vegetable state, or mentally intact.

If it were requested I could post some very nasty pictures of those that lived, including one I recall of a young African fighter sat on the back of a truck, with most of his face missing (I think it was from an FN FAL or HK G3 firing 7.62x51mm).

There are also failed suicide victims who often have large amounts of their heads missing, due to not aiming the shotgun properly.
That and there have been a few in combat that have only had gouges taken out of their heads from where a bullet doesn't hit them 'dead on'.

Of course in combat situations, you don't always have time to check on the guy that you shot, especially if he is far away and his buddies have time to drag the body away. Benny was right up close and should of course checked you over to make sure you were dead. But that's where you have to suspend belief, for the sake of the plot. It's a bit like Bond villains usually not sticking around to see him die, or just shooting him repeatedly.

(not that it always works, as Clarence Bodicker found out in Robocop  )

Mapex I think you hit spot on, but what makes it complicated is complete lack of CHARNAME past history. I got the impresion that the other former courier saw your name and forwarded the job to you, set us up. Yet again lack of past history makes it just a guess.

There was even this guy which got hit hard in the head by some railway spike (or such thing) penetrating the whole skull and he survived ... strange enough. But he never was the same person anymore. Heh

Thats what I didnt understood as well ... why have you been such a "special" curier again ? Gives the game any explenation for this ? Just curious

He survived.

All the intro line means is that while it may seem that you've run into bad luck (Being ambushed) it was really meant to happen because[spoiler:8c6b1b59c5]Yes Man knew where'ed you be and when and you were dommed to fall into the trap regardless[/spoiler:8c6b1b59c5] Also, the fact that Benny was using a 9mm pretty much answered why you survived, the Hi-power uses ball which has pansy stopping power, and people have survived 4 shots to the forehead with .38

Victor saw the courier get shot and dug him up immediately.

I believe that Benny is referring to the Yes Man. After all, he knew who to track and where, precisely because he cheated the system and had inside info, pretty much the definition of rigging.
