The OLD Zelda games..........

PsychoSniper

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
.......are they abandonware yet ?

Im asking because I cant find my old copy of a link to the past (SNES) and it just occured to me that the games over a decade old now.

Anyway, Im just wondering if any of the old topdown view Zelda games are freeware (or if there are any decent emulators out there)

I'm not sure. I have the original collector's NES cart for Zelda and somewhere for the second Zelda game so I can legally get the emulations of them. I should look into that.

It would be cool if they're abandonware or whatever though. - Colt

Yeah, I used to play the NES Zelda games on I froget who's NES (I was 5-6 at the time) and got link to the past for SNES for Xmas when SNES came out.

What would be really cool is if someones made some freeware engine that emulates the Zelda engine, along with an editor for it (sorta like what Ianout is for Fallout........)

Well, I'm not sure if this is completely legal, but Nintendo knows about it and didn't take any action against it.
http://www.zeldaclassic.com

Full remake of the original, not ROM, not crap, just pure goodness. Even comes with its own level editor.

What companies like Sega and Nintendo like to do is release 15 year old games again in a shameless grab for money. I still consider it abandonware, because if it's more than a decade old, you don't have to put up with their bullshit.

I have all Zelda roms up to and including snes and a nes and snes emulator. E-mail or MSN me and I'll give you a link offa my server to download them.

Just PM me a link pls :)'

EDIT - Ekarderif THANK YOU!!!!!!!! That ZeldaCasslic.com site seems to be basicly what I was looking for, execpt for the origonal Zelda. Deffinatly a sweet find.

funny you should mention Zelda: A link to the past on SNES, just picked it up the other day. luckily for me, flagstaff has a used books store that sells old video games as well. Its such a badass game, but i forget almost everything.

Complain about copyright laws, not the companies who still support old games. Even if Nintendo did not rerelease the games, it would not be legal to download them. Copyright does not expire just because the product is no longer in stores. The biggest problem is with companies like Disney who keep pushing laws lengthening copyrights. At this rate, no copyrights will ever expire.

If it were up to me, a piece of interactive software would only be able to fall under patent law, not copyright. Copyright is for things like books and plays that don't get point releases, patches, etc, on a regular basis... Sometimes a movie or a book may get a "Special Edition", but you get the point. Software is more like a took (or toy) rather than a static creative work. I honestly don't see any reason for it to be copyrighted; patent is more appropriate anyways.

I thought that copyrighting software was to protect , for the most part, a game's story or a certain way something was implemented in a program. :?

I guess you're right. IMO, all software copyrights should have a life of 7 years, rather than 75.

It would make it a lot easier on me, financially, to be 7 weeks.

Copyrights are intellectual protection (original works and what not). Patents are scientific protection (new ideas that'll generally benefit society). A copyright can be maintained indefinitely, whereas a patent may be renewed once (I believe they last 20 years). Patents are designed so that people are willing to research for a new, better product without the hassle of competition to crush that research (how would you like it if you spend billions making the cure for cancer and suddenly Bill Gates sells the same drug?).

A game is a little bit of both. Personally, I'd consider it much closer to the former, but I can see an argument for the latter as well.

Copyrights can't be maintained indefintely, I believe they expire some 75 years after the creation of the product (or 75 years after the death of the creator).
And copyrights are automatically granted with everything you make. What I'm typing right now is copyright me, 2005, just because I'm typing it.
However copyrights on programs have nothing to do with their algorithms, for instance. If you create an algorithm that soemone else already has created (and this is extremely frequent) then that algorithm isn't copyrighted, but the program that was made where the algorithm was used in was copyrighted. And this works just fine.
What you wouldn't want, however, would be software patents. 'Oh look, I think I made a new algorithm. Patent!'
*two days later, different guy*
'Hey, I just created an algorithm that does exactly what I need. However, it has already been patented, since I've just been contacted to not use it or get sued. What the fuck?'
That's NOT what you'd want.

No, it's not. It's legal to make a backup copy from your version, but you cannot download a backup someone else made of the software.
