As we all know, it takes 1 calorie to heat 1 gram of water 1 degree centigrade. Translated into meaningful terms, this means that if you eat a very cold dessert (generally consisting of water in large part), the natural processes which raise the consumed dessert to body temperature during the digestive cycle literally sucks the calories out of the only available source, your body fat.

For example, a dessert served and eaten at near 0 degrees C (32.2 deg. F) will in a short time be raised to the normal body temperature of 37 degrees C (98.6 deg. F). For each gram of dessert eaten, that process takes approximately 37 calories as stated above. The average desser tportion is 6 oz, or 168 grams. Therefore, by operation of thermodynamiclaw, 6,216 calories (1 cal./gm/deg. x 37 deg. x 168 gms) are extracted from body fat as the dessert's temperature is normalized.

Allowing for the 1,200 latent calories in the dessert, the net calorie loss is approximately 5,000 calories.

Obviously, the more cold dessert you eat,the better off you are and the faster you will lose weight, if that is your goal.

This process works equally well when drinking very cold beer in frosted glasses. Each ounce of beer contains 16 latent calories, but extracts 1,036 calories (6,216 cal. per 6 oz. portion) in the temperature normalizing process. Thus the net calorie loss per ounce of beer is 1,020 calories. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to calculate that 12,240 calories (12 oz. x 1,020 cal./oz.) are extracted from the body in the process of drinking a can of beer.

Frozen desserts, e.g., ice cream, are even more beneficial, since it takes 83 cal./gm to melt them (i.e., raise them to 0 deg. C) and an additional 37 cal./gm to further raise them to body temperature. The results here are really remarkable, and it beats running hands down.

Unfortunately, for those who eat pizza as an excuse to drink beer, pizza (loaded with latent calories and served above body temperature) induces an opposite effect. But, thankfully, as the astute reader should have already reasoned, the obvious solution is to drink a lot of beer with pizza and follow up immediately with large bowls of ice cream.

We could all be thin if we were to adhere religiously to a pizza, beer, and ice cream diet.
 
the all beer diet doesnt work that well. I did it last weekend... i went from friday afternoon (about 1) to sunday morning (about 10:30) eating nothing and just drinking beer. I only lost a few pounds (may sound like a lot bot my weight fluctuates more than most people)

Bah, details details! The point is that this the diet that everybody dreams of! Scientifically, it's all sound logic. We don't need to worry about things like the levels of toxidity in overconsuming these items of nourishments!

btw i lost the pounds on RFA-1.
I had gone up to 185 lbs to box, but i couldn't handle the weight so i went back down to 170 which is slightly lower than my natural weight.
Now i cruise at 175-180.
 
My friend tells me ephedra works wonders (although its outlawed in the NCAA) but i would never mess around with drugs to lose weight. Just cut down portions (especially carbs), drink water, and work out.

But ephedra-cafeine and aspirin in the pure form and correctly proportionned works wonders.
 
My mom had Atkins' book but I never read it. I just avoided carbs, almost entirely, and exercised 2-3 times a day. Christmas break, my senior year of high school I was 330 pounds (I'm 6'2"). Nine months later, around thanksgiving of my first year at college, I was 215. The beauty of the diet is that you don't have to starve yourself. And once the pounds started melting off (like 5 a week), someone would have had to hold me at gunpoint to get me to eat a slice of bread.

But yeah, I'm pretty much a walking talk show story. If anyone is serious about losing weight I can offer my humble advice.

Oh, and I was actually playing Everquest a lot at the time, too. Hah! It actually had a positive effect on my life - kept my mind off spaghetti, and sweets and stuff =)
 
Actually, the Atkins diet is pretty bad for your body. Sure, you're burning all of your fat because you aren't eating any carbs, but your keytone levels skyrocket. That's why you probably get an upset stomach or some other uncomfortable feeling all of the time. Diabetics need to monitor their keytone levels all the time because of its fat-burning abilities. They don't want their glucose levels to be astronomical.

So that's why I say you should stick with the proven Beer/Ice Cream/Pizza diet.
 
Water at 0 C is ice. Ice and food are very different. And a lot of that food is digested before reaching 37 C. So you probably gain more calories than you lose. Plus, it just doesn't work. However logical it may be, it won't work. Beer, ice cream, and pizza will not work. uh-uh. Sorry. No. You cannot call it a "proven diet."
 
Water in it's pure form does ot get to 0 C it freezes at 4 C, between 4 and 0 we call it slush.

What Ozrat was referring to there was that it takes a certain amount of heat to cause it to change state (go from a solid to a liquid). This heat is called the latent heat of melting (? that's correct isn't it, it just sounds funny and I don't have any textbooks handy).

Don't know about the 4degCel thing. Sounds familiar. Probably something due to partial pressures. I know that without a seed for crystallisation, you can take water(yes, even pure) down to extremely cold temperatures without it solidifying. There have been cases where people have come to a lake high in the mountains and put their hand in to get water and the whole lake has snap frozen, with their hand still in the lake. Just the very slightest motion was enough to provide the start for crystalline growth and the rest followed.



Ozrat, just had a look in my freezer. My Icecream has 434kJ per 50g serving. Specific heat of water is 4.18 kJ/kg.K, so for 50g raised from 0 to 37degCel the heat requirement is 7.73kJ. As you can see, it just doesn't stack up.

Strange thing is that it lists 434kJ and 104Cal. My understanding was that a calorie was 4.18J, but this puts it at 4.18kJ. I wonder if dieticians use a different calorie?
 
The "434kJ per 50g serving" is the amount of energy you get from eating the ice cream, not what it takes to heat it up.

From what I remember, yes, food calories are different. I could be wrong, but that seems right to me.

Actually UJ, the phase changing temperature range isn't set at one specific mark. H2O can change from water to ice or ice to water either a few degrees above 0 C or a few degrees below 0 C
