THE PRESIDENTIAL BRIEFING

15 February 2019 22:06

The Enclave Presidential Rig

The Oval Office

President Stephan Richardson was staring with a blank face at General Zack Dawson from his chair, trying to grasp what did he just said. A fully functional State with a population of almost two million people? That we somehow didn’t discover until now, even though we have naval bases on the north of it? Has far less radiation in contrast to the mainland? And that Country is Alaska of all places! President came back to his senses after a dense couple of seconds.

President;

“You said you accommodated those… scouts, for three days, right?”

General;

“Yes sir, I looked over them in person, and even talked to some of them.”

President started gazing at him again, trying to pick one question from a myriad of queries.

“Zack, it’s been 12 years since I appointed you to the command of Arctic bases. And we have dozens of ice breaks and warships over there, right?”

“Yes sir.”

“So how in the hell you didn’t discover them before?”

“Well, sir, as you might know, we send ships that go through the Bering Strait. Since the land itself has some very rough terrain and climate. This country of theirs practically has no presence to the far north. They also seem to have little to no naval presence as far as we have seen.”

“You are telling me that not a single Vertibird of ours has ever detected any kind of mass activity before?”

“The scouts told us that the State itself is mostly established around Anchorage and Fairbanks, which also is apparently the proclaimed capital of this “Republic of Alaska” of theirs.”

He continued;

“Sir, we have no Vertibird fly routes that go over those areas, or don’t even have a Vertibird base nearby.”

“We really should increase our number of bases, should we?”

The President turned to the massive map of the World on the wall and looked at the location of Alaska and Fairbanks in particular.

“Still makes no sense…”

“What doesn’t make sense sir?”

“Everything really”

He turned back to General;

“For my whole life I never actually thought of Alaska. I knew that it was the CenterPoint in our war against Communists. The Communists killed the entire world over that piece of land. But after that, I never guessed that it still might have biological life in it. All the people that went there called it a ‘barren wasteland covered with nuclear winter’.”

“Well, we never send a proper expedition, right?”

“Heh, we haven’t, because not a single one of would us ever thought of something like this, why would we? Only a madman would think of something like this.”

He laughed to himself and looked at the ceiling,

“A whole goddamn country in Alaska, and we never even heard of it.”

“Sir… *We* kind of had a contact with them, apparently.”

President looked right back at him

“What”

“After those scouts reached our Base at Point Barrow a week ago, I ordered the men there to take a look at the administrational archives to see if we had anything at all that said something about these folks.”

“Well?”

“We found this;”

The General pulled a small document from his long coat and put it on the Presidential desk.

President Richardson looked puzzled

“What is this supposed to mean?”

“The document that is in front of you sir, is older than a hundred years old. Apparently, the local Commander of the Base had contact from inside of the country. This individual was no ordinary man, he was a high-level official from the Alaskan Republic. My men are still working on this subject, and we have yet too much to learn. We don’t know if anybody on the Presidential Rig ever heard of this back then.”

“Only a couple of thousand people live here, keeping a secret of such a scale would be impossible.”

“Maybe it was relevant back then but got lost in time somehow. Or the officials never took the reports seriously, can’t blame them if that’s the case.”

“I see. And this “high-level official” you were talking about; do we know who he was?”

General paused to gather his thoughts for a moment.

“Walt Shelton. His name was Walt Shelton. He was apparently the “Minister of Propaganda” of this “Alaskan Republic”. In 2106 he came to the base after establishing contact with the base commander. We don’t know the details on how he did it.”

“Why did he resign then?”

“The report says that he was “unhappy” with the state of the “Alaskan Republic”, he claims that the Republic itself is a lost cause and must reunite itself with the USA. There are more details in the document than I can give to you at the moment sir. I advise you to take a look at it.”

President Richardson opened up the document and started eyeballing over it. He muttered to himself:

“Why “Minister” though? Why not Secretary, but Minister? Like what the British had.”

The General hastily tried to answer;

“I think it’s because of- “

“Don’t even bother to answer, I found the cause.”

Richardson looked closer:

“So apparently, this little Alaska of theirs had a… ‘great leader’ by the name of Adrien Newton. He seems to have an… conflicting relation… with the old world. With, America in particular.”

The General stepped in to answer;

“Yes, and also apparently- “

“I don’t remember asking you, General.”

The President raised his head. The General was clearly mortified.

“I’m sorry sir, I- “

The General immediately went back to silence realizing his juvenile behavior. President continued the reading.

President continued to read the document for a couple of minutes, his eyes slowly filled with resentment as he turned the pages. The General waited in distress for President to conclude his ‘research’, knowing that he won’t be pleased when he’s done with it.

Minutes passed and President was at his tipping point. The moment he read the line: “…As Adrien Newton said; “The only positive thing that can be said about the USA was its demise” …” he had enough. He leaped from his chair and threw the document to the wall, screaming; “INSANITY, TREACHERY!”. The General was extremely nervous and didn’t know how to answer, and luckily for him, he didn’t have to. The President loudly declared:

“GENERAL! THERE ARE TURNCOATS OCCUPYING THE AMERICAN LAND! THESE PEOPLE ARE COMMUNISTS, NAZIS! THEY ARE THE COMBINATION OF EVERYTHING THAT THIS COUNTRY IS MEANT TO STAND AGAINST! THEY ARE A GREATER THREAT TO US THAN MUTANTS OR BARBARIANS! I DON’T CARE IN THE SLIGHTEST IF THEY’RE UNTAINTED BY THE RADIATION, THIS TREACHEROUS ALASKA WILL DIE BEFORE ME!”

The General tried to answer:

“Your orders… sir?”

“GATHER THE STAFF, GATHER THE ARMY, GATHER WHAT THE HELL YOU CAN GATHER, WE ARE GOING TO WAR!”

The President threw himself back to his chair as the General stood up. The General simply said;

“As you order sir.”

Just as he was about to leave to room, President called out to him;

“And just so you know General, I’m going to find out why that report never got into our hands, and you’re going to help me out on that. Dismissed.”

“Aye, sir.”

General Zack Dawson then left the room.
