Trailer above.
The upcoming punisher movie will star Ray Stevenson (who also portrayed Titus Pullo in the HBO special Rome).

I think its a great role and the punisher role fits Ray Stevenson like a glove. Best punisher actor so far !

Not really a big fan of the Punisher but will def. be looking out for this one

What? Thomas Jane was (and this is going by the trailer, which I've watched a lot) has a much better look. True, he didn't have any awesome Ennis lines to say, (from my memory of the movie, haven't seen it for more'n a year) but he just has an odd look to him, in regards to this role. He said that Ennis line well (There are times I'd like to get my hands on God), and I'm not going to say he can't do it, just that he looks like an odd choice.
Also, a bit early to make such a statement. The most recent Punisher did a pretty good job of adapting the character, if not the story, and the old one...Well, Dolph Lundgren is just cool. I want a friggin paisan to play Punisher.
I want this to be a more realistic, brutal (in the sense of Casino Royal vs. any Pierce Brosnan or older Bond flick) movie than that chandelier bit seems to be going for, though I trust this director after seeing "Green Street Hooligans" a hella lot.

tl;dr version,

I want to suck off Garth Ennis; also they should make a heavily Punisher MAX influenced movie.

I want to see Barracuda on the big screen so badly...

I know it probably won't happen, but still.

Also, I'm not digging some of the gunplay in this trailer, too much shooting while spinning. (I could make a GIF of it...)

Last I heard, (and this could be false, but my sources are quite good), Thomas Jane read the script and didn't like it enough to star in the film.

I've been RPing in GTASA that I'm Barracuda for quite a while. Very entertaining. Got CJ buffed out and wearing a black tank top and everything. No grill, though, unfortunately.

I was talkin' to malky about the Thomas Jane thing, he said it's been rewritten a bunch since then.

And yeah, that spinny shit it just the thing I don't want in the movie, but I really liked that last shot where it shows Castle getting ready to take down a room full of dudes. Cool shot, and that feels a bit more like the Punisher's style.

Also, why is Microchip in this? Microchip sucks. Only time I remember liking him was in the Spider-Man cartoon, when I was still wearing onesies.

I have two theories.

1) They're following the actual Punisher: War Zone comics, which started off okay and quickly went downhill.

2) They're operating under the assumption that Microchip helps to humanize the Punisher, which is both false and stupid.

The Punisher works much better as a horrifying anti-hero than as Friend To All Children.

For sure. He's just like a muthafucka, but he ain't your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Was War Zone the one where he killed Stiltman? That was pretty cool, though I could do without the costume and all.

Microchip should be handled in this the same way he was handled in MAX.

Edit:

Wait, War Zone the kind of old one War Zone? That one pissed me off. Some of the shittiest characters ever in that. Friggin "The Sniper". Christ.

You're thinking of Punisher: War Journal, which was a relaunch of the title of the same name.

War Zone was a different title, which wasn't too good to be honest. It had it's moments, but it quickly segued into shittyness.

Microchip should be handled in this the same way he was handled in MAX.

Yes.

*spoilers for non-comic book fans*
With a 12-gauge to the face.
*spoilers done, for now...*

After reading his origin story comic, I have no reason to doubt that's exactly what should have happened to Microchip.

Let me preface this by saying Ennis's MAX Punisher series is fucking incredible, and it's an absolute tragedy that he's leaving the book. Seriously, if you haven't read it pick up a trade paperback (I recommend Up is Down, Black is White or The Slavers), you will fall instantly in love.

I'm pretty excited about this movie. I think Stevenson is inspired casting and I'm glad they're rebooting it. The last Punisher movie was entertaining, but it wasn't what I want in a flick about Frank Castle. I like the tone that they're going with (obviously heavily inspired by Punisher MAX), and I like Lexi Alexander as the director.

I kind of dislike the Boondock Saints-esque upside down spinning while firing automatic pistols bit, but I can deal with it as long as Ennis lines like "I'd like to get my hands on God." are included in full abundance. Extra kudos if Frank does some voice-over narration. My favorite part of the MAX series is his inner monologue.

Oh. Impressive. Would your "quite good" source start with a Wiki and end with a Pedia? Seriously, everyone knows that Jane passed after this movie went through a thousand shitty re-writes. It's a bummer because he loves the character and I thought he was the best part of the last movie, but such is life. The script has since been retooled and changed immensely (I think the only thing left from the draft that Jane hated is the origin of Jigsaw), so I'm not too worried. Stevenson was practically born to play Castle. Minus the weird neck-shield thing I think he looks great in the outfit.

War Zone won't actually be following any of the comics too closely, but the tone has been verified as that of the MAX books. The original working title was "Welcome Back, Frank," but I guess they decided against that for clarity's sake.

I wouldn't mind Micro going through the same story arc he went through in MAX, but it might take a movie or two to set that up. Wayne Knight is good casting.

I'm going to remain pessimistic about the film, therefore if it's good I will be pleasantly surprised.

If I'm right, then it's no loss.

My plan is teh epic win!

Ray Stevenson = Default Awesome

I'm a big fan of Rome, watched both seasons and Titus Pullo is easily one of the best and most varied characters. Plus, Stevenson just looks badass.

He reminds me a bit of the Heavy from TF2, though.

This is the crappiest trailer I've ever seen. It doesn't explain anything, it's just catchy one liners and stunts. That said, i did like Titus Pullo so may be worth a look.

Yeah, I felt the same when I saw the trailer (hence why I mentioned it in the bad movie thread). Maybe we will be surprised eh?

I was very afraid of this one when he walked. I thought it so unique to see a actor care that much about a comic book character! I was sad to see him go but from what I've heard, I completely agree with his decision.

I do hope you are right, that this was retooled and is a different script than what he walked away from.

Growing up, while the other kids oogled over Spiderman, Batman and the X-Men... I was all about The Punisher... no one saw value in my comic BOOKS (by Starlin and Girndberg). No once cared about my complete Punisher card sets... I was by all intents and purposes, a noob.

So maybe, this movie, will allow my inside voice to shout, "I told you so!" ... then again, maybe not... Who wants to buy all my comics and cards? Maybe my 5&1/4" copy of The Punisher by Paragon Software ?

There's not much to explain about The Punisher aside from "Hey his family got shot up and now he kills the fuck out of everyone." Everyone with a tiny bit of comic-knowledge knows the basic premise of the character, explaining it in detail would be pretty redundant. On top of that, 99% of action movie trailers are all one-liners and stunts.

I don't need a deep, fleshed out story for The Punisher. Give him an M-16 and some badass shit to say as he mows down gangsters and I will be more than pleased.

Uh-huh. Why was The Punisher such a piece of shit then?

Two words.

John Travolta.

Honestly, I enjoy seeing John as the villain. Especially so in password SWORDFISH...

Why did the last Punisher film suck? Good question, I strongly doubt it had anything to do with one man and everything to do with the story and powers that be.

I think it's because they tried to do too much with the story and plugged it full of references to old Punisher comics rather than come up with something compelling.

Also, they had to kill his entire extended family.

That was retarded.

They just went too far with the last Punisher movie. I liked it for what it was but it simply wasn't dark enough. I didn't like all of the lighthearted humor and I didn't like Frank's grand scheme to get back at Howard Saint. Running around scamming hotel receipts and moving fire hydrants? No. Busting through the door with hand grenades and an M-60? Yes.

The shootout at the end was really fucking rad, though.

Here's hoping this movie is 100 minutes of shootouts and rain.

If I hadn't seen the gladiator scene from Rome with Titus Pullo, I might not buy him as the Punisher. That scene vaulted him to a whole 'nother level in my eyes.

Seems like Marvel finally figured out that casting good actors is important - see Ironman.
