The U r-Quan Masters aka Star Control 2

Where'd That 6th Toe Come From?
http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

This isn't excactly news, but it's the first I've heard of it, so I thought I'd share, in case someone here didn't already know.

These guys have ported Star Control 2 for windows, mac OS, and linux, and called it The Ur-Quan Masters. And it's freeware. On top of that thay've added speech and some new music.

It's still just an alpha, but I've been playing it for a couple of hours now, and I've had zero problems so far.

This game is excellent, so if you haven't played it before I highly recommend giving it a try. You may want to wait with downloading the speech pack untill you've tried the game, as the speech pack is 100+ megabytes, and isn't really necessary for playing the game.

What the fuck happened to my subject title?

Edited the subject title because of the word-filter.

I know it's a project that people are doing in their spare time, but jeez, they've been at it for like three years now and it's still in alpha? Shouldn't having the entire source code at hand have sped things up a bit?

This Post Speaks With the Voice and Authority of the U.r-Quan.

The game is coming slowly because the source they have is for the 3DO, not the PC. Furthermore, there are numerous copyright issues with certain portions of the in-game movies and cutscenes, but fortunately not the voicework. For an alpha release, it's remarkably stable, under both XP and (Gasp!) ME I've noted very few problems. On top of it all the people who are doing it are doing it for free because they love the game. The fact that it's playable, from beginning to end, as-is, may have stalled development since there's less of an incentive. You can't watch the opening or ending cutscenes, though, although I believe they are available as separate downloads. Needless to say, I can highly recommend the game!

:D
This.
Game.
Rules.

I always liked how the u r-quans start saying "Oh no, not you again" after you beat up enough of them

Edit: bad word filter

I love that word filter.

I heard about this game ages ago. Seems like it's taking forever to get out of the alpha stages. Hopefully they won't just give up or get stomped.

Ba-bump!

I got the Windows installer for this, which is just over 1 MB. Supposedly it includes everything, which I assume covers music, voice samples and so on. Then I noticed that older (pre-open source) downloads of the full game are over 4 MB. Is this fishy? Did compression get that much better in the last few years? Anyone play the v0.6.2 release?

Ah a fantastic game. The first time I played and took forever getting through I realized I had allowed the deaths of many a race. Damn you U r-Quan! Damn you!

Are you sure it includes voices and music? The 0.62 file that's available on sourceforge is 1.16 MB and that one doesn't include the extra stuff, as far as I can tell. You can get it all from the link in the first post.

That's where I got it. Taking another look at their download page, it seems I was perhaps fooled by the layout. Below the "source code" heading there's a "content" heading which is perhaps common to all systems, though it doesn't say. Adding those files we're up to some 150 MB or so, which is more than 4 I guess.

Sadly, I also discovered you need a graphics card to run the game, which I didn't think would be necessary for a 1992 game. Oh well.
