The Vault is Closing

Vault13.net is going to close. The prediction i did to Saint_Proverbius (i think) in September last year is becoming real; at that time i said most of the major fallout sites and many of the small ones were going to disapear, if a Fallout3 announcement didn´t happen in time to avoid that. I was wrong about the timelimit, since i said until Christhmas, and that didn´t happened, but nowadays it seems that those that felt the Tactics debacle, the netbubble burst and the fact the original Fallout games are too old would be too much to keep a thriving community were right.

It`s a shame though...

The future of NMA and DAC now interest me even more, will they become the isolated saylors that keep the boat running, until the weather gets better, or will they sunk like the rest of the fleet?

I remember telling Lockout that small focused projects with a base in Fallout, but expanding in other areas would probably be the future, but i still hope something as resilient as the NMA project will go on.

Any ideas?

No, the reason V13 is closing is because JC doesn't feel like he has the time to devote to the site mainly.

Not like he's done much in the passed year, but he owns the domain.

Yep, but overall with sites creeping to a standstill (the illuminati, annunaki.net, many clan sites, et coetera) and the number of those that disapeared (too many to list, my favourites change almost everyweek) the downspiral trend signs are stronger than ever (you`re the exception DarkUnderlord).

Some futurology and suggestions, at this time, would be interesting.

Any ideas, guys and girls?

Well, activity on this messageboard has definitely decreased. Hope it doesn't stay that way, hope they finally get a move on with F3, it was the reason I got here in the first place two years ago...

I presume you're talking about the Fan Made Fallout project there? A few of us are still going. Luckily we've got a new site setup with our own forum so we avoid the Vault13 problems (Thank the Gods!!).

I'd say DAC will surge and a few Vault13 people might find there ways over here. This site was never a powerhouse, so I'd say it will still continue with a strong, solid fan-base behind it.

The Fan Made Fallout project might spark some interest, but that's still YEARS away from completion at this stage. It'd be interesting (or rather, damned annoying) if the community had shrivelled up by then. :(

Yes, with the Fan Made Fallout... some of us are still going strong. We are still in the early stages, and there is the threat that interest will die out. We even lost some people after the Vault13 forums went fubar.

Looks like this cozy place will be my new home... at least I know a few people around here (Hey Darky! :D). Always liked No Mutants Allowed, just never got around to the forums.

Well, we've been large but we keep things on an even level here.

We don't care who is part of what, just as long as they don't drag any political clannie shit onto the forums. That's been pretty much the unwritten rule, yet we do take a good laugh as some do asinine things and try to act innocent like someone taking a particular domain in an elaborate troll.

Therefore, most of those who thrive on that silly poltical crap find themselves running into a brick wall here, as we'll just boot their ass out. Also, it's been mostly filled with long-time CRPG vets of years, and I really have missed OSRP from the old Interplay boards, old DAC boards, and here. Plus, a lot of the regulars don't put up with a lot of nonsense, either.

at first i didn't like Vault13. But When i was finally forced to join by dark underlord i started to enjoy the stupid Avatar system. but then it decided to break on me =]

It would be quite diffcult to find another site with as much diversity and veterans and knowledge and power as V13. Where on the net can you talk about your feelings, news events, FO1/2/3?, art, debate, history(like the UW village) in one single place?

Anyway, I posted a thread asking about this on V13, but I doubt it'll get answered.

So here goes:

Has anyone considered V54 as a new home? (hint, hint:D)

And, what would happen to all the old posts in the database, and all the profiles?

And one final stupid question, how much would it take in us$ to host something like V13 per month/year?

"And, what would happen to all the old posts in the database, and all the profiles?"

They`re backing everything in CD`s, but the problem is they grew tired of changing from one network to another every few months.

Just a few weeks before the release of Tactics JC came up with the idea of transforming vault13 in a gigantic Fallout portal, with the help of Miroslav, Kreegle and Killian, putting every map and mod the community would produce in a single place. Miro went to the army, and Tactics turn out to be, well, week...

So the motivation cooled off a bit then, and just trying to keep things rolling seemed harder and harder as time passed.

I grew to like the place, except for the clan wars, wich were the most boring thing happening in the community; everyone just gave too much importance to stupid fights...

The UV was the most interesting part of the boards (hello Mandrake), hope they will keep it up somewhere else.

One last note to those that come here for just a year or so, NMA was one of the most respected sites in the net. I have mags praising it, it was quoted everywhere with lots of respect, and still is the favourite place from many in IP or former IP.

And it was the first place that kept me paying attention to it for over two years, wich was a first to me (together with blues and voodooextreme, but it sometimes takes months without me going there).

The UV used NMA as their home, so as the Order, the Illuminati still refer to it in their main page as "the motherboard", frenchvault was created after gadro spent some time here and felt prepared to create a french fallout site, etc...

The only thing that puzzles me is the quantity of people that come here to check the main page, but never post on the boards.

What really puzzles me is the number of people who see the main page, but don't post anything in the comments. Whereas Vault13 always had 10+ comments in any one news topic (average).

I think it's because we have a registration system and also IP logging.

Whereas with V13, a lot of chuckleheads could post anonymously.

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON May-24-02 AT 11:42AM (GMT)[p]As for our forum, the reason many people don't post here: I think it has to do with the forum we have, we have vBulleting ready for installation, but alas no PHP support yet. So untill we get that, we can't do much...
I've installed a test version of UBB, just to see how it is. You guys can check it out here: http://www.nma-fallout.com/cgi-bin/forum_ubb/ultimatebb.cgi

Comments: Rosh is dead on, I'd like to have it without a registration, but Rosh is the head honcho regarding the commenting system..

Ahhh.... Now I remember. That stopped me from commenting many times in the past. I kept thinking "I'll comment on that" but I needed to register. If I remember correctly, I *think* I couldn't even use my forum password, I had to actually register for the comments seperately.

I don't know.... I mean, yes, it's a lovely forum... But.... :sniff: I think I'd actually miss this lovely place. I always liked the "uniqueness" of the forums. They're so confusing to get into in the first place (through all the conference stuff) and well.... I like them. Especially how you can reply to someone and keep replying and replying and it keeps pushing the page out to the right constantly with every reply. They're just little quirks that I always liked. I think I've grown attached to them in a way.

I suppose it's a necessary step though....

EDIT: Is there any point in us registering in that forum yet? Or should we wait until it actually replaces this one? And if it replaces this one, will it keep the memberlist, or will you be recreating it? To think.... We could all be some of the first people to join the forum. :)

EDIT2: Never mind. I just tried to register and got the e-mail error message :)

I like yaBB more than UBB simply because I like how configurable it is for the users..

As for having no registration, I find that without accountability, there are a lot of morons who will post spam for the hell of it. I don't think it is so much required for a comments page in the news section, but for the messageboard itself, opening up the doors wide open is inviting a lot of abuse.

Well, the UBB one is just for testing. Not sure if we should use it or not. But if we don't get PHP (as of now we're still waiting, can't wait too long either), I'd want to go for another forum.. YaBB or UBB, not sure....I was thinking about installing a version of YaBB aswell, just to try that out as well..
What you guys think ? Any one here with experience in vBulletin, YaBB or UBB ?

And I do see your point Xotor, and agree...But do you think we would get that many spammers ?If we do, we can always set it to restricted or something...

I'd suggest vBulletin and trim it down a little. YaBB still has a couple of security holes that I know of, and at times under stress it can flake out. UBB has some nice things, but it can also be a bit wonky at times.

I too want vBulletin, I'm nagging at Jim for it.... hopefully he'll come trough for us...
Miro: I've been working on a new design aswell.... If you guys want to email me, use the awil@statoil.com ...I can't access my nma-fallout email yet...no DSL... *sobb, sobb*..

So, anyone consider V54?

I mean it was called V13, so why not make the logical next step up.....:D
