Thief 3: Deadly Shadows

I dont know about you guys, but I'm pretty excited about this one.
I'm pretty new to the series, I picked up Thief 1 and 2 together in some kind of preowned deal at my local EB for like $6 recently and just loved them. Loved the atmosphere, loved the story, loved stealing stuff...

Its actually more like a role playing game then an action game, in that you really have to get inside the mind of your character to get very far at all.

But I digress. Like I said, I'm pretty excited about the 3rd one, and the nice touch of that freelancing bit inbetween missions. I was just wondering if anyone else was thinking about getting it, or had anything to say about the introduction of the 3rd person mode.
I for one, am trying to keep an open mind, although I've heard alot of "Purists" complain long and loudly. I mean its optional, come on!

Also, it seems like they fixed the invisble war physics engine... no more throwing corpses around like paper airplanes it seems...

I havent played them myself but Ive read alot about it and how much fans are dying to get it so Im gonna give it a shot, whens the due date on it?

Staying on topic (I hope), are Thief 1 and 2 worth picking up? Reviews are good, and I'm downloading a demo. Thoughts?

Hmm

The graphics are pretty blah by modern standards, but hey, we all still play Fallout and wasteland, so no big deal there. They are pretty hard later on, and can be slow paced, but if you love stealth based games, its a must have.

The second one gets kinda funky towards the end... also the ending itself totally blows.

I'm waiting until a demo comes out, or until enough people post rave reviews of it to get excited about T3. I was really dissapointed with DX:IW and I find it hard to believe they could've done a better job on this game - so far all I expect of Thief is that the levels will be tiny and it will run like shit in any resolution except 640x480.

Will it get decent FPS on the Xbox? Invisble War seemed to run pretty decent. There will also be mid mission loads in Thief, but I hear they are pretty well placed so you dont have to be going back and forth. Its a concession to us Xbox owners. Although I do own a PC, it is by no means a gaming rig.

I actually have Thief 2 but haven't had a chance to play it. I have heard it's excellent (though not as good as Thief 1. Thief 3, hopefully continues the success of the franchise.

AH, DON'T MAKE ME STRANGLE YOU!!! :violent:

Phew. Don't mind me. Every time someone proudly declares he's an "Xbox/PS2/GameCube owner", I get this urge to terminate his existence in a very violent manner.

I'm totally over it now.

Thief I&2, as a whole, are better then Fallout 1&2. Fallout alone is better then either one of them, but Thief creates IMHO the greatest gaming world ever, save maybe Grim Fandango. It's an amazing mishmash of The Name of the Rose (which I'm halfway thru, my last Eco book), Dickens and Indiana Jones. Thief 1 has a better ending then Fallout 1. Thief 2 is almost as good. I would suggest buying Thief I now.

Sumed it up nicely there, Montez.

I played Thief 1, great, great game. But I disagree, it does not have a better ending than Fallout 1.

Haven't played T2 yet.

And that's a good book you're reading.

Yep. I actually have read all of Eco's books almost backwards...Baudolino, Focault's Pendulum, Island of the Day Before then, finally, Name of the Rose.

I played the both the Thief games, didn't really enjoy them. For some reason, older stealth game just don't work for me, I can only really be successful (defined for me by not becoming frustrated with the game) with more recent stealth games. I have to say though, together they still don't outshine Fallout.

Which should mean I should be successful with Thief 3. Like some other people around here, I've become disappointed with multi-console games, especially with Dues Ex: Invisible War; when taken to the PC.

I got the demo last night, I'll fire it up today and give some impressions. Pretty suprising, but it's been getting great feedback and reviews from people playing it so I'm pretty optimistic.

It's really good. Alot better then DX:IW.

I'll start with Thief 1 and 2, and once I've upgraded to a better graphics card I'll get Thief 3. But reviews say it's good. Won't buy it full price though.

Just finished the demo and I have to say it's incredible, definitely a worthy sequel. To sum it up, it's pretty much the same gameplay as thief 1 and 2, and the graphics upgrade makes it even more immersive than the first two. The same voice actor is in it too.

I ran without a hitch on my computer, which I wasn't expecting at all. I have a P4 @ 1.8 Ghz, 512Mb ram, and a Geforce FX5600 and it ran smoothly with no stuttering in 1024x768, Bloom on and Shadows at the middle setting. I was going to run a framerate utility while I was playing but I decided not to because it ran so well that I didn't really care what the FPS were.

The only downside is that it makes me dislike Deus Ex 2 even more. Thief is much better looking than DX and has much, much bigger levels (the demo level is bigger than any map in DX2), yet DX2 choked my computer, was a spastic, stuttering mess and had longer loading times for levels half the size. Obviously I can't compare plots yet, but it seems like T3 would win that match up too. I'll never understand how they could fuck up DX2 so badly when just the demo for T3 shows that they're capable of making great games.

I have a P4 2.4 GHz, 1.5 GB RDRAM, and a Geforce 4 Ti4600, and it ran like shit. I had the same settings as you, Montez, but the game froze every 10 seconds or so. Always been like that though. God, I hate my computer. If it was a person, I'd skullfuck him/her.
