Water Chip? Been There, Done That

-----------------------------------
As the Internet continues to evolve and ad sales decline,
more and more sites, including some smaller gaming sites,
are starting to look for new ways to make money. For the
past week or so a lot of message boards on various sites
have been dominated by the talk of subscribing to a site
like you would a magazine. It seems that most folks don't
like that idea. I think subscriptions could be a good
thing. A lot of gaming sites offer very specific content
that really doesn't appeal to a mass audience, so for
them subscriptions probably would make sense. A site that
only offers news, reviews, and previews of turn-based
games isn't going to be too appealing to advertisers;
however, fans of that genre might be willing to spend 20
bucks a year to access all that content. The biggest
hurdle to this happening, of course, is that everyone
thinks that everything on the Internet should be free.
Some sites, like Slate.com, tried subscriptions, but they
didn't fare that well because they were competing against
free sites. Times are changing, though, and the funny
money is gone. I think we're going to start seeing more
sites charging for their content in the next year or so.
So what do you think? Would you subscribe to a Web site
like you would a magazine? Drop me a note and let me know.
(For the paranoid among you, this is not a subversive
attempt to see if our readers would subscribe to
Gamecenter; unlike a lot of Internet companies out there,
CNET is kicking ass and taking names. I'm just curious
what everyone thinks of the idea.)

Smell ya later!

now, what is your oppionion on this? I think I'm not qualified to talk, as I am more a webmaster than a surfer...

[font size=1" color="#FF0000]LAST EDITED ON Jan-20-01 AT 05:24PM (GMT)[p]Well, (good) space on a webserver isn't free, and I think webmasters of a site should get something for their doings (I, for instance, am happy enough about this site to give a small donation. Of course, I don't have the money to donate an amount of money that would make sense. Miroslav, or any other webmaster here probably wouldn't give a shit about my $5 ). But I think that if you had to pay for certain things, like if I had to pay for entering this messageboard, I'd just wouldn't visit those pages.
I think it's a good thing webpages (non-porno sites of course) are free, although it discourages people a bit of setting up sites.
Maybe the gouvernment should start funding websites a bit, or something like that.
Last, I don't dislike banners that much, as long as the amount of them on one page isn't too much, but that's obvious.

[EDIT]

I just got an idea. If the advertising board gets popular, maybe the webmasters here could start renting out space in there. Like $1 for a message.

First off, HELL NO I wouldn't pay for site content! Even as a webmaster myself I wouldn't expect anyone to pay for modding tutorials and programs.

Secondly, isn't it illegal to make money off of someone else's product?

Though a lot and work and effort go into maintaining a website I will always refuse to pay any money to visit one as there will be another somewheres else with the same info thats free.
Case in point ,I recently was interested in the U-boat war during WWII and found a great site that had info on EVERY U-boat launched during the war.But with-in a couple of weeks of finding the site the web-god there decided he should be paid for his efforts.I couldn't help but notice that a lot of info(granted not all)there I had already read at other web-sites,free ones at that.

okey, I'm responding to everyone's answers.

wtf should someone pay for that? really, hosting costs, even for porn sites, but you never had to pay for any of these... you can always find a free password out there ;)

anyway, even if I wanted, I could not pay for any service on the internet :) I don't have a credit card :)

as things have started, we'll have warez internet soon ;)

How dumb can you get?

How stupid can these people be? If a "small" gaming site is *that* small, they obviously shouldn't *be* on a gaming network, but rather on a free webspace provider which can provide the same services. These "small" gaming websites keep their fanbase not because of content, but because they like the "group" of people *at* the website.

I mean to tell you the truth, I don't visit this website because of the Fallout content (sorry Miroslav :), but more because of the people on the boards. Now if suddenly this site becomes subscription-based and I have to shove out $20 to visit here, you can just as well say "goodbye" because I'd rather just open up my own site on some free webspace provider and invite everyone to go there instead.

That person writing that article needs to understand that "small" gaming sites don't survive on content, but rather because of stuff like their messageboards which produces repeat-visitors. You're not going to find many new visitors after the fanfare of the game is over, that's for sure.
