This whole licensing thing id has done well for years

Yeah we're not doing it anymore.

With the recent purchase of Arkane Studios to go along with it, it looks like ZeniMax is trying very hard to climb into the big-boy shoes.

Stuff like declaring an embargo on licensing is brash tho, especially on an old-time licenser like id. It smells a bit of delusions of grandeur, ZeniMax walking a step ahead of its growth. We'll see how it works out for them

Oh that's not very good news, eh? :(

Why stop licensing of their engine? They still get money from it, and they can negotiate the license on their own terms. Just seems... 'selfish' :)

To me it's a bit like scientists not sharing data... Not very good for scientific (gaming) progress.

And here I was thinking Id Tech 5 would be the UE3-killer. God only knows what Epic Games has in store for us with Unreal Engine 4.

Also, I was watching QuakeCon yesterday (with Carmack's huge talk thing) and I think he mentioned something about Zenimax making it a bit difficult for him to release Id Tech 4 as open source after RAGE comes out or something, and that it might be even worse with Id Tech 5.

Remember who used id Tech 4. Only "id family".

Human Head Studios - Prey (came from Raven Software)
Raven Software (Soldier of Fortune 1-2, Star Trek, Star Wars Jedi Knight, Quake 4, Wolfenstein)
Splash Damage (MP for Return to Castle Wolfenstein and DOOM 3, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, BRINK)

id Tech 3 was used only by several developers not from "id family". So, id Tech 5 is not UT3 killer.

Turn-based Fallout 4 on id Tech 5!
Turn-based Fallout 4 on id Tech 5! :)

Yeah, I guess. I've always wanted Id to be more flexible with Id Tech 4 though, it's a really nice engine.

i think its has nothing to do with "scientific sharing" but an attempt to get more developers to sign with them as their publisher.

if it works its nice otherwise they will ony suffer for it as there is many other engines which are more popular (thus much larger third party product integration) and at the very least has similar performance.

what an over kill  in any case we will have to wait sometime before FO4 first we got Rage which is basically a FO clone and probably will be much more popular than FO world.
