Tim Cain invades my pc!

First time out of the vault
I've just re-installed Fallout 2 (bored by new games I miss that awesome piece of art) on my portable with vista.
Then I go to programs>black isle and drag the F2 icon out of the startmenu into the desktop only to find the face of Tim Cain in person staring at me...feels odd at first, I though was misplacement of some sort, on a second sight I tough was Tim Hume then I realized was Cain instead, in person/face

The game is installed through The Ultimate Collection (interplay, microforte, blackisle, halifax, virgin) European Version boxed in ESP/ITA.

ps.: searched for this without succeeding, sorry if it's been posted already

Just an easter egg. The exe file includes both a small icon with Vault Boy and big icon with Tim Cain. Back in 1997, the big icons were rarely used because the default resolutions were smaller, so it was somehting most people didn't see unless they switched their view to big icons.

I've always wondered about that.

Didn't know it was Tim Cain though. Interesting.

Still, I prefer the older icon :)

Changing the icon does the trick, they were having fun back in the days :)
Thanks for the info

Icon Problem (Fallout Trilogy)

Alright, this isn't really game play help, but I don't know where to put this topic.

So, I have gotten a new computer, which is running Windows Vista (ugh, the transition from Windows 2000 to Vista is not a comfortable one). Anyway, I installed the Fallout Trilogy and the little icons are displaying Vault Boy, as God intended, but when I make a shortcut for the desktop, the icon is not Vault Boy at all. Its some hairy guy's face. What the hell is that?? When I got to "change icon" it has the Vault Boy icon selected already (and it's the only icon there).

How can I get the icon to be Vault Boy and rid my Fallout application of this... guy? I know this may seem a little silly, the game works perfectly, but it's little things like bug the hell out of me. Why? Because I'm insane! Now help!

It is a little silly and I got no idea myself, yet I know of what you speak. Strangely... its the other way around for me. In the folders on the My Computer section, inside the game files, its the Hairy-mans face. But when I put it on my Quicklaunch and Start Menu, its Vault-boy.

*Tries the desktop method.* Whoop, Hairy-man too. This is semantic, you know. The guy is probably a Developer for Fallout or something.

So.. put the Icon directly on your Start Menu. It should look fine there if it means so much to you.

 Nevermind, I "fixed" it. Just changed it to one of the icons from the Fallout Tactics folder, now it's Vault Boy. Yay! :D

That's weird that they had it like that. Funny, but still weird (and a little maddening for someone like me  )

I was completely freaked out and wondering where the normal Vault Boy icon was when this happened. I never thought for it to be a devs easter egg kinda thing. I didn't even know it was Tim Cain. >_> lol

Previously on NMA...

Don't you guys recognize Tim Cain?

Sorry, must have missed the newsletter that informs you that to be a fan of fallout you must recognise all of the fallout development team, their blood types and the names of their first born children.

It's nice to know who it is though.

How exactly do you override the Tim Cain icon ?

We made an installer for a mod and its localization and we want to make sure the shortcut is always the vault boy face.

You can use some resource tool like Resource Hacker to modify the embedded icons, but it would change the checksum of EXE and you need to supply new CRC value in ddraw.ini (if the mod uses sfall). Or just extract the 32x32 Vault Boy icon from EXE and edit the shortcut to use that icon file.

Ionizing radiation hazard icon in unins000.exe looks way cooler than Vault Boy!
