Tim Cain is working on a new IP which he says Fallout fans will enjoy, and which has a lot of "Fallout and Arcanum style and humor".

He talked about it in his talk at Reboot Develop 2017 Conference.

A codex:er called "hexer" were at Tim:s talk and posted the following on RPG Codex:

I'm at a game dev conference in Croatia and Tim Cain said yesterday he's working on a game which he cannot name...
but he said if you like Fallout you'll really like this game.
Some people from the audience started shouting Fallout 5 and he nodded sort of a yes.

I''ll try to find out more at tonight's party.. MCA and T-Ray are also here!

Then he posted:

OK, MCA pried extra info from him when they did a world building panel around the noon...
It's an original IP and the in-game currency are credits.. no bottlecaps..
So no it's not Fallout but still a PA setting.

We have a huge party tonight so I'm getting wasted and getting that extra info from him!
GERONIMOOOO!

So it's not confirmed but the father of Fallout is creating a new IP and it might be post-apoc!

Is this the one secret Obsidian's project or something new?

"if you like Fallout you'll really like this game."
Depends on the Fallout game now doesn't it?

The currency are credits? Sounds like a more advanced sci-fi setting, like space stuff advanced.

Would be nice to see a steampunk post-apoc game (like Arcanum mixed with Fallout settings), I would skip the fantasy races and magic from Arcanum and keep it with mainly Humans.

What I'm expecting is a modern game with first person or close up third person perspective aiming at console market and young audience, nothing even remotely close to Arcanum or Fallout in terms of gameplay. Think of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines; fast paced story-driven title with combat system simplified/action packed enough to satisfy the modern target audience.

This is Tim Cain's new approach to game mechanics design:

Think of an RPG like a mountain. In my older RPG's, the only way to the top was going up cliffs, but many of you like rock climbing so it didn't matter. But a lot of people never even tried to do it. So I am building a road that lets people drive to the top of the mountain. The mountain is still as high as it used to be and the view is just as spectacular, but now more people can enjoy it.

.. which means even people previously lost in Arcanum or Fallout character sheet can "climb" the mountain now:

Ew...
I like when developers lock player out of content in RPG's, it gives the player a reason to replay the games and discover new things. If the content is too accessible then what's left for future playthroughs? Different dialogue choices and quest solutions, sure, but that's all?

*sigh*

Yeah, still waiting for a proper Fallout spiritual sequel.

When even the old school of RPGs go down the simplifying road... It will be all up to indie studios now to keep the classic RPG style games coming.
A bit sad that it seems we won't be getting epic, quality games like we did in the past. Indie studios only manage to get so much money to make their games that I doubt they will be able to make one as "big" as the best classics.

lol I first played Arcanum when I was 14 and I was pretty stupid back then and hardly knew any english. casuals must be so fucking dumb, or at least developers conception of casual players.

I doubt something as awesome as vampires could ever come out today ( in terms of writing and style), even from these guys. The market's too big for innovation. But i'm still looking forward to this.
