Todd Howard on Fallout 4

I actually stopped waiting the hour they told us to buy FOPOS so Fallout 3 could be released... It was Anderson wasn't it? Ah...

I think Beth got it largely because they worked with Herve's inadequacies. They basically gave him enough to keep him afloat when he was drowning, and even gave him the possibility of a profit, which he jumped at. From what I've read I wouldn't be surprised if there was some under the table dealings as well given his desperation. It seems they initially just bought rights to one game giving him enough to stay in business awhile longer, and then allowing Herve to be Herve he dug himself another hole and they were there to expand their deal to take the whole enchilada at firesale prices.

Herve is obviously an idiot. FO3 would of course have been another major money maker but he just never wanted to commit enough funds to properly develop it, or so it seems, odds are due to his mismanagement of other titles. He let a sure fire successful sequel wither on the vine for nearly a decade stringing folks along with low cost crap like the two BOS titles. The very promises he made attempting to market the original BOS as an attempt to get more funds for FO3 clearly demonstate he knew there was a demand for it. I'm sure it was always a liferaft in his mind though, till eventually Beth tore it from his greedy little limbs as he floundered trying to clean up the mess he made of his own company.

Beth doing a Fallout 4 was pretty much always in the cards as well. I mean Hollywood has a proven track record of greenlighting sequels for movies that suck rocks regardless so it's not exactly surprising Beth goes the same route of taking the money and running before the consumer realizes what kind of crap they've bought. Given that they already had the rights to FO3 and then later bought the whole franchise it's pretty obvious they planned on running it as far into the ground as they could possibly manage.

They also seem to have a good grasp of Herve.

They probably bought FO a bit cheaper by allowing him to put in his dream clause of Fallout Online in there while at the same time putting in clauses that given his past history it's unlikely in the extreme he'll manage to pull it off before the clauses strip him of the rights and give them to Beth. All they really need to do for the Fallout Online rights to complete the franchise is to sit back and let Herve be Herve. His history kinda speaks for him on his ability to do that, and he already has another lawsuit going over his idiotic handling of the Fallout franchise.

The amazing thing, though, would be if Herve -despite himself- actually managed to pull it together and get Fallout Online launched before his rights to the mmo time out and if he manages to avoid all the other clauses that would strip him of the rights. If, and this is even more unlikely given the craptastic nature of most mmo launches, Fallout Online was actually not shit and loaded with bugs and errors on launch a la SWG, VGm & AoC all of which figured they'd fix things after launch and all of whome seived customers doing so - and if they managed to capture the original Fallout magic with the help of the few original designers they picked up there would be the oddity of two competing franchises taking different routes.

I can't really think of another time somthing like that has ever actually happened.

I mean if Fallout Online actually took off and actually lived up to the franchises orginal concepts and people actually liked it... what would that do to Beth's side of the franchise?

Unfortunately it's unlikely, but I'd quite like to see Beth embarassed by their shoddy design and implementation of their own franchise by a current game one upping them. It'd certainly give them issues with FO4 and further bastardized sequels if their was an MMO showing them up through better implementation of the ideas and utilization fo a post apocalyptic world.

Beth's lack of ability is becoming more and more apparent as they cling to an old and faulty engine anyway. I'd really like for more Oblivion fans to play Mount and Blade and see what a couple of Turkish guys can basically pull off in their basement as opposed to Beth's studio crap. Companies like Bioware generally develop new engines or at least new ways of using existing ones to distinguish the differing franchises they cultivate, which is pretty radically different than Bethesda - but then so is the quality of their games. I'm not sure how many facelifts Beth can give it's originally faulty engine before even their fanboys start admitting the problems, but the resulting crash should be amusing and well deserved.

Oh Gooood! Let the franchise die already! This is like taking a 95-year old Alzheimer patient with a colostomy bag, and forcing him to compete in the Summer olympics.

lol, they are promising a sequel...

they must be pretty sure about FO3 being a huge success.

Unfortunately it's pretty obvious. Even if only oblivion fans will buy it, it still will earn enough $$$.
