Todd says that they are bringing classic hardcore RPG mechanics for Starfield

Also Fallout 4: Far Harbor's writer is the main quest writer for this game.

Eh, the writing may have been better than that of Fallout 4 itself but I still found it pretty unmemorable and just more Bethesda Fallout.

I suspect the script for Starfield will be pretty generic.

Are they saying letting the player define their own background/traits and having (kinda) proper choices & consequences are classic hardcore RPG mechanics?

For them it is.
Most people now see RPGs as a sort of cinematic experience in which choices in general don't have that much impact other than who you choose to romance.
Basically action-adventures but with some stat building elements.

This, except even the stat building elements are slowly falling away in what modern gamers consider to be an RPG. I have little to no doubt that in 10 years an RPG with be considering to be any game with cinematic storytelling, open world, and an inventory system. And people will praise these changes as "modernization" to create a more "fun" game.

Their track record shows that they know nothing about this—or that they always believed it was the path away from the mainstream gamer [dollars].

I don't expect them to learn new tricks, or to acquire esteem for them anytime soon.

Their attitude thus far has always reminded of the Brawndo argument, incredulous of the worth of water.

They have no reason to bring hardcore RPG mechanics when they can just make Skyrim in space and make all the money.

This is just the usual Todd Howard's overhyping bullshit to sell the game.

I know it is a dead meme in general but still I can not resist.

Not really because good RPG's are still being made they just aren't FPS loot fest garbage like Bethesda makes and now Obsidian makes and now CD Projekt makes and I guess maybe others.
