WARSAW (AFP) - Poland's liberal opposition promised a new pro-business, Europe-friendly government Monday after trouncing the Kaczynski twins' ruling conservative alliance in a snap election.

With 90 percent of ballots counted, opposition leader Donald Tusk's Civic Platform (PO) won a projected 208 seats in parliament, routing the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party of Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his identical twin brother, President Lech Kaczynski, with 164.

Expatriates as well as young, urban, centrist voters in Poland turned out in droves to end the Kaczynski duo's two-year grip on power. Participation reached almost 54 percent -- the highest level since the fall of the communist regime in 1989.

"The heavy turnout in the cities killed us," PiS strategist Jacek Kurski told Polish TVN24 Monday.

At last. I've been waiting for this for a long, long time. Their neo-nazi and populist coalition members got 1.3 and 1.5 percent, respectively. I don't know a single person who isn't overjoyed by this.

The end of an ass-backwards, ultra-right jingoist rule.

Fuck yea. I got so drunk i don't remember when i lost contact with reality. My head is hurting now, but for the first time in my life, i'm also happy at the same time. :>

I wonder who are those 32.04% people who voted for PiS.. i don't know one person who did vote for them.

Good to hear. We are in the federal election campaign here in Australia too. The conservative PM has been in office for 11 years and I'm happy to see that it looks like he will finally go, so we can get away from the more extreme right-wing policies designed to diminish the rights of employees and favour employers and big business, and experience some positive change.

There was a televised leadership debate last night and the incumbent was demolished, although the media don't seem to agree on that for whatever strange reason.

On the downside, the opposition leader is more of a centre-right boring bureaucrat rather than a dynamic Labor leader, with an even more boring shadow treasurer. There are a couple of celebrity candidates that I'd love to see winning. This includes the weather man from our national news and a top journalist going for the PM's seat. I am encouraged that an ex-mayor here in my seat is aiming to rid us of the pompous businessman Malcolm Turnbull. The rock star Labor member is in a safe seat.

I'd vote Labor if Julia Gillard were opposition leader, but I'm not as you're spot on when it comes to Rudd.

I think those twins should do a talkshow. Could be really popular in the rural areas of poland. But as political leaders I always found them a bit scary...bit power hungry, human rights ignorant.

Bah,
Nothing will change - from 15 years Poland is ruled by left that destroys business with extremely high taxes.
There are two major camps - post-Solidarity and post-Communism - the first are people from "Solidarnosc" - a socialist movement that overthrew "communism" in Poland and the second are people from PZPR - the socialist party that ruled in times of "communism".

Those two movements rule so ineptly that in every elections the current ruling party is hated and changed for the other one.

Now we had a change from post-Solidarity PiS to post-Solidarity PO. Despite what people say, PiS aren't right - they are socialists, but with religious/nationalist flavour.
PO are socialists too.
Both PO and PiS pretend that they aren't socialist and hide their socialism behind euphemisms like "solidar country" or "social government".
And PO wants to increase social spendings and decrease taxes at the same time. They even voted for government paying 1000 Polish Gold Pieces for every newborn baby.

Nuff said.

That's the thing - at least under PO, it won't keep going down. And, to be honest, i think they really can make a positive change. If, and what magnitude it will have, remains to be seen.

*applause*

Congratulations, you don't know jack shit about basic politics.

PO doesn't want to increase social spendings, ya 'tard. They want to semi-privatize part of the healthcare sector. How socialist! PO stands for a "citizens' republic" not a "social government".

Yeah, yeah, that's what people said in 1988, too.

Bullshit. People from "Solidarność" are in PO, PiS, LiD *and* PSL. Remember, PiS accused Lech Wałęsa of being a soviet spy. There is no such thing as a "commie vs solidarnosc" thing going on. Wake up.

Despite what people say, PiS aren't right - they are socialists, but with religious/nationalist flavour.

Wait, PiS fucked over every single thing a "socialist" government should be taking care of, namely: schools, the healthcare system, trade unions.

What they did was create a superstrong "anticorruption police" which became a political police in the hands of The Big Duck, the armed wing of his "OMFG COMMUNIST" McCarthy-style witch hunts.

Say what you say, this shit is over and it definitely will get better. You can't have a worse government than the one we had, with the retards from PiS, LPR and Samoobrona deciding national issues, making us look like Europe's Clowns and straining relationships with just about everyone. Oh yes, I forgot. They also negociated a super-duper deal to put anti-ballistic missiles in our back yards. Woohoo!

Wait a minute... Poland is a democracy? Boy, the world sure is changing.

Say, is Auschwitz-Birkenau still in proper jew-s?
Har.

Poland was one of the first nations in the world to have a constitution.

Say, is Auschwitz-Birkenau still in proper jew-s?
Har.

What?

Goody, the way I keep reading Poland being referred as a "curiosity" in the European media was getting on my nerves.

Still your President will surely summon chaos on the head of the new government, that's not nice.

europe is kinda sucking Poland dry of graduates and cheap labour, because their wages at home suck donkeydick... i know this polish chick that works as a waitress. she makes more as a waitress than what she'd earn with her accounting degree (university) back home.

now that's fucking sad...
(and so is the fact she cant get an accounting job in belgium, it seems. not one that pays better than what she makes now anyway.)
