Van Buren editor (please don't hurt me) :)

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
And another thought that's been nagging in my brains for a long while. I understand, it must have been discussed somewhere, but no matter how I tried, I could not find any relevant thread, here or elsewhere.

So, Van Buren. Being 90% (or so they say) finished, it is "barbarous" and "vandalic" to leave it behind, as a dead end of entire Fallout history. We have more than rudimentary engine, we have graphics engine, we even have detailed and complete designer documents (see my previous thread), which require only minor amendments (if any).

On the other hand, it is also well known, that the engine is not fully functional, there's even no turn-based mode yet, has many bugs, etc. etc. etc. Others say, that this engine is not usable at all and it is even easier to make a game from a scratch (which I actually find hard to believe).

With that in mind, can somebody explain me, why nobody cares to dabble with the unfinished Van Buren, but prefers to start something totally new (with due respect - such as Afterfall, and any other similar projects), or use 10-years old FO2 engine editor or try out something with almost "unroleplayable" FOT?

Is Van Buren totally rubbish, and should it remain nothing else than a sad monument to our epoch, where good taste and culture are inevitably sacrificed to the immediate commercial benefit?

We don't have a mostly working engine.
We have a tech demo.

We don't have most of the sprites and graphics engine.
We have a few choice pieces of art from the tech demo.

We don't have the source code ...
That bastard Bethsoft has the source code ...

And unless Bethsoft releases the Van Buren source code we're never going to have it. Chances of that are pretty much nil!

I'm sorry - there really isn't much to discuss here :(

"That bastards Bethsoft" names Obsidian Entertaiment.

Really?!?

I always thought that when Bethsoft bought the Fallout license they took all of the art and engine and everything else from all the Fallout Titles.

I've been mislead :(

Didn't one of the Van Buren devs said, that work with that engine was a hell job? I think, it would be harder to make a mod with the Van Buren engine, then with the fallout 2 engine.

Methinks you're both wrong. Obsidian purchased art and tiles from Fallout for general purposes, Bethesda has all Fallout materials but has no particular interest in the Van Buren engine itself (I doubt it was even a part of the deal, since it's actually an inhouse engine for Jefferson/Van Buren, not a Fallout asset).

As far as I know, the VB engine is still with Interplay.

However, no one should have any interest in it. It's impossible to work on, if you want to make a 3D Van Buren, use Torque and export the animations from Van Buren or something.

We need to get a covert team of people together, to "find" what we need for us.....

Like Mission Impossiable and shit, hehe it be worth the jail time...

Actaully just being able to export the 3D models into a useable format would be a big bonus for modders. If we had good models to work from people could render up a lot of free art to use in Fallout 2, add this to the FIFE engine and people could potentialy make an open source free version of fallout :)
