Van Buren = Fallout 3?

Ever since JE Sawyer posted this thread specualtions on the IPLY boards have run high about Van Buren being Fallout 3. Van Buren will be announced before Jefferson, which was the project they were working on but it looks like they had to scrap/shelve it for now due to licenseing problems.
There are numberous threads about Fallout 3 nowadays at the IPLY boards, but remember kids..no cursing, no spamming, no bad talk, no good talk, no talk at all on the IPLY boards! (brought to you by the good folks at IPLY).

Van Buren = Fallout 3? sounds almost too good to be true... but considering all the shit IPLY have been releasing lately, and the fact that ALL Fallout developers left BIS, i kinda hope Van Buren isn't Fallout 3, because who knows what piece of s*** they would turn it into.

P.S. Official motto of Interplay has been changed. Now it's "By lamers for gamers"

Chris Taylor, the lead designer on Fallout has returned to BIS from a brief stay at Troika. Chris Avellone has worked on FO2, where he did New Reno, and has accepted it wasn`t his best work. He still can do a few good things with FO3, i`m sure. Josh Sawyer has this interesting thread going on, it shows a few good ideas (except the akimbo guns, what´s with that all of a sudden, every game has to have dual-helded guns?...)

Err..? I thought he was developing Middle Earth Online or something to do with Tolkien, and that there had been no involvement with Troika at all.

Stupid Woo or Matrix kiddies. The morons just don't understand that it wasn't a part of the setting and where it was taken from.

If this inference of a FO 3 initial developement has any legs, it could still be walking many ways at once.

A distraction, even if there was no FOBOS limping to release in Q4 '03.

An attraction, the routine rumor to call home the faithful, and jerk any
appendage the individual is willing to expose. Massaging the masses..... or group grope......or calculated chiropracty....to run up the unique hits per day of their home site and forum.

Or if their intent is pure of heart, an olive branch. If that be the case, it's obvious to me that we can't all speak at once at the I'play
forums. That freaked out the passive aggressives and the control obsessives at I'play. I would entrust my eye ball time on that forum to a certified emmassary of NMA and DAC. Such qualified
ambassadors would include some notary and notorious personnas that were recently banned.

Why? If the intent is to recharge the discsussion so their dev's could mine the info, why not have the best drop by and provide
the best and the brightest.....gratis(*)...

*Gasp!* Ban him!

I can understand having dual weapons, but only for certain types such as knives. Are there *really* that many people out there who can proficiently handle two guns at the same time? I think not.

I don't think there are many people who'd use two knives either...

More likely a knife and some blunt object basicaly serving as a type of buckler... Course that's quite a bit too Fantasy for my taste...

But two knives are a bit too Martial Arts for my tastes.

Movie Ma......

I open my dictionary to the lead heading "imbitter", but this discussion of FO and FO 3, to be, is viable, assuming any discourse of FO 3 would entail I'play "wanting" feedback from the fans. Even if it's only individual employees taking their own initiative to "recreate" on the forums. Got to start building somewhere, even if it's a castle in the sand.

It's now in "Chuck's Cannon" that feedback is not an option, for the narrowly focused FOBOS.. For whatever reason or rationalization, there NEVER was time, or TALENT to dip BG:DA into a pot of FEV, and mutate the engine accordingly. SPECIAL might not fit, but the images of Advanced Power Armor might have, or even the, what ,"T51a"
was that the funky mach 1 version of P-Armor?

Was looking for "machination" and "Machiavellian" in the dictionary, was ASS-uming that any viable discussion of FO3 would be some sort of manipulation.
And "what for whom" would a creative discourse benifit? Possibly
those in I'play that would want to see FO 3 activity. Those that would have 'proof' for the "Princes of I'play" by the return of "light and reason, and all things wonderful" to the I'play forums. "Proof" of the necessity of FO 3 activity.

Movie Ma...... movie machinations.... old B+W movie western, two guns akimbo, Cowboyism. Breasts akimbo we can leave to Lara Croft....and FOBOS.. This 'Pistols Akimbo' would be a special martial arts skill, whether it's 'B' Westerns or "B" 'Matrix'. This could be used to parody this elitist weapons handling by requiring a Perk (with strength, perception , AND CHARISMA requirements) to gain' Matrix', or Randolf Scott, level proficencies.

Why charisma? You gotta' look kewl to be kewl baby! Need that long slicker or rain coat flappin' in the virtual breeze baby! Need thozzz.. D-Dark .....'+1' "Shades Of Reno"!

Movie Machiavellianism. Dazzle the "Princes of I'play" with what
they think the world of gamers wants, no, what the world of gamers will BUY. And during production make it fit the FO Universe,
even if it's an Easter Egg kinda tinsel.

I've done it at a firing range with two .22 caliber pistols. I hit about 65% of the shots I fired. The .22s don't recoil as much as a 9mm or .45 caliber though.

And no I don't want to see two-gun mojo in FO3.

Thats what i was about to say, trying to hit a target at a moderate range, say about 15-20 yards, with a higher caliber pistol using one hand is very difficult to do. Trying to hit a target 10 yards further with only one hand would be damn near impossible. Guns akimbo would only be worth doing if your target was 5 feet and front of you and asleep. Pardon my slang but john woo is a fucking moron.

Is it going to boil down to what's realistic now?
You know there's no such thing as laser/plasma rifles, not now and probably not in another 80 years, and there's no way a single person can wield a minigun effectively using nothing but you're own hands to handle the recoil - let alone carrying it around... And Powerarmors?
These things may not be essential to the game either but I thought they were fun and would like to see them again in FO3... well, at least it's better than throwing magic fireballs - *pukes*.
So why not akimbos... and what's the big deal? The game will sell better and you don't have to use it... :)

And btw, 15-20 yards is a pretty fookin long distance!! john woo (and every other director) may exaggerate the actors arms skills a lot (hey, it's just a movie!) but I haven't seen any movies where they fight at that distance, and don't miss alot, afterall.

Arms Akimbo

Akimbo

Arms Akimbo

In what passes for the real world, akimbo is used with 'arms'.

'Arms akimbo' : hands on hips and elbows bend like a bow, think of the fashion models turning on the runway or manikins in the department store window, Vogue 'zine covers. Posturing.

English is one of those "close enough" sports, so if folks get your drift
you've successfully communicated. After we learn to beat the rocks together, we can move on to the 'secret of fire'. Forum's aflame.

I think I saw the linkage of "guns akimbo" at DAC and it was a reference to Lara Croft. Tomb Raider's been two gunning it for quite a while.
This is where I started refering to Lara Croft as "breasts akimbo", because the back beat of the thread had to do with what sells in the game biz. "Legs akimbo" might have applied too.
Pardon this simplification, it need not apply to those with 'towering standards'. Breasts=sex, and guns=violence, and BEHIND this 'social interaction' is a 'social intercourse': guns=phallis=sex. Sex sells. ""....Happyness is a warm gun....""

Is it going to boil down to what's realistic now?

A two pistol mode could be adopted to a new FO engine,
if it engenders an appropriate "'40's-'50's-early'60's" B movie
style: elan and panache. Varmit killing with the Magnum Revolver's
fast action and hitting power was a feature in both FO, and FO 2.
Special skills might not be enough, a Perk might validate this two pistol posturing. An extraordinary skill would require a commitment of experience points, a high Perception AND Charisma, the expense of a Perk, and-or a deficiet on some other skill; as in the One Hander Trait.

Let the shallow of memory flash on "Woo-ism", the rest of us recall
the bravado of the Saturday Matinee; the floors sticky with spilt soft drinks and gooie Milk Duds.... 5 minutes to the end of reel, 16 bad guys to dispatch to glory, two "Peace Maker's": the deus ex machina, so "The Chosen One" can have time to kiss his horse and ride the love interest into the sunset, or visa versa......

Two gunning established in the genre roots, pre FOBOS, no big problem.

Post FOBOS: the problem now is Chuck Cuevas's superficial mining of the FO forums. I bet that it was here or DAC that he gleened out
"guns akimbo". Just like he may have learned that "Bettie Page"
was a known icon of '50's culture. But he's not talking to our worthy
ELECTED interviewers. {My eye ball time votes for NMA and DAC
jounalistic represntation.} So this is all a best quess.

Post FOBOS: the problem now is Chuck Cuevas's inclusion of
"guns akimbo" has created a backlash that may rule out twin
pistol simultaneous rapid fire.

The realism is not the physics of a parallel universe, an alternate time line like FO. The roots of FO culture are broad enough and could be flexible, if it conforms to the unique FO formula. A Natural Philosophy that delves into dimensions beyond the sex=guns=sex flat line between the X - Y.
(You all can do that math, right? X = Y = X, X = X, flat line on the graph, and flat line means 'dead' in many disciplines.)

The realism is the "gag reflex" in the here and now, the post FOBOS Syndrome.

The bigbreasts girl with a thong was a character of the original version of the game, no doubt. When doing the alterations to the FOBOS settings they did one of two things:

  • searched on the internet and found Betty
  • or they found the S&M poster on Fallout2, thought that would be enough, than when the fans complained they got plan B, and went to your posts on DAC and found an excuse.

We won`t probably know what happened, a bit of speculation doesn`t hurt i guess.

The "guns akimbo" are a result of market research beeing made at the MTV/Matrix teen viewers, and it´s getting repetitive.
But you do have a point that if it wasn´t first used as a childish weapon to piss the FO fans by Chuck there are a few points that could be said in favour of it.

Btw i´m actually a John Woo fan :)

Oh holy one , no fault or blame intended.

I seek only, to discreetly, tar the market'eers and feather the shallow.

Forgive my back swing obsuring the light , the Art Of Action.

The guilt is surely mine.

One finger points out, three point back.

I am humbled....
