What to do with David Hicks?

quietfanatic

Ancient One
David Hicks was an Australian citizen who converted to Islam and decided to fight and learn the ways of the Koran.

In his family background he came from a fairly unstable family and was poorly educated. For no apparent reason, he ended up going to Pakistan, trained as an muslim missionary and then went to Kosovo and then Afghanistan.

He is now in Cuba and our government is not asking for him to be handed over.

Are us Aussies second class citizens. US and UK have released sosme "terrorists".[/list]

Well, If your government isnt asking for him to be released... Why release him? He's got free room and board. Medical, dental, and easy access to the latest in electroshock helthcare technology.

Seems to me he's got it better than most people do.

Oh, and yes, you aussies ARE second clas citizens:)
j/k

I'd say THIRD CLASS citizens. Aussies are like the descendents of British criminals. These guys butchered the Tasmanians just for fun. And you guys did the same thing to the aboriginals as the yanks did to the American indians. Hell, I don't give a flaming fuck about Aussies, and I don't think anyone else does either. I hope the hole in the ozone layer that is above Australia gets bigger and bigger in the very near future.
And quietfanatic: you complain about one Australian in Guantanamo Bay, while you guys have "concentration camps" for all the immigrants that want to live in your country. Shame on you. Get a life!

Plus, they have to live in Australia. :(

PS. Are you OK Blade Runner? You seem very bitchy of late.

Who? Me? :look:

Ask around: I haven't felt good in years, and I don't think that's going to change very soon (I'm a slacker when it comes to improving my life). But hey: aren't I right, maybe?

Why would your government want him back? I'm not being a smartass, I just don't understand why they would care.

For doing this, the guy is obviously very mentally disturbed. He shouldn't be locked up with normal prisoners.

*joins Murdoch and awaits flamefest*

Are we talking about David Hicks the famous anthropologist who studied the East Tetum people?

Or is he English?

More details please

This kind of makes me think about the happy little traitor John Walker Lindh who, by the way, was only sentenced to 20 years. It was just great how his attorney and family cleaned him up and explained how he was just an unfortunate rich kid who didn't know what he was doing. After that, it was clear that there would be no charge of treason...they should've just let him have an accident involving a door on the plane on the way over from Gitmo.

Robert Hanssen was sentenced to life without parole for working as a spy for the USSR and later Russia. Hmmm, this must be the age of leniency. The Rosenbergs got what was coming, however.

Still, Klaus Fuchs got away with only 15 years and Ted Hall and Saville Sax weren't charged with anything.

****End of treason rant****

Oooooh....

It's just too bad that the US Constitution clearly states that citizens (and other people) are ALLOWED to have political views that go against the American government and are able to form militias and fight against it....

Watch as I amazingly spout useless knowledge from my already big mouth!

Article 3, Section 3 of the US Constitution states "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort..."

I didn't say anything about views. My bitching rant falls under 'giving aid'.

The second amendment is in place to ensure that the people have a way to protect themselves if the government started voiding the rights spelled out in the constitution. Also, you have to remember that back then monarchies were everywhere and democracies were nowhere...that's why the first constitution never gave the president any real power or responsibility.
