Which XP compatible PC controller to get?

So Old I'm Losing Radiation Signs
I need to get a controller for my pc, joystick vs joypad (type thingy) which is best for FPS games these days? Last time I used a joystick to play a shooter was with Wolfenstein 3d, I guess looking up/down would be problematic.

I remember reading the xbox controller is compatible with xp. Is that the xbox or 360 controller and does anyone know if it needs a convertor?

Cheers

what the hell? a joystick or a joypad for FPS games? what the fuck have you been smoking?

I'm pretty sure they made a 360 controller for the PC. Why would you want that instead of using a mouse and keyboard though?

I said I needed to, not that I wanted to. But it's because of an injury to my arm. Spending more than 5 minutes playing an FPS game hurts! And I haven't got my monies worth out of them yet.

So the xbox controller for the pc was seperate from the console version? Damn that means I won't be able to go get one today.

I suppose if you can only use one arm you could get a regular joystick, use the yaw to turn, x/y axis for aiming and the hat switch for forwards and backwards. You can get them reasonably cheap from Microdirect.com or overclockers.co.uk

I heard that the default controller of X360 is windows compatible. Just plug it into a USB port, Windows will automatically recognize it or if not, Window's auto-update can find the driver on Microsoft site.

That's all I know

Okay thanks, I was wondering if it would fit a usb port or not.

Cheers.

yeah, the 360 wired controller uses USB. you'd be set, and its a nice controller too. (dpad sucks ASS though)

I don't know if it works on xp, though. I thought it was Vista only?

(I do not know as I don't own Vista, or a 360 controller)

It works on XP. Also, you can get a wireless X360 pad and one of these:

I bought the corded 360 controller in the end. It's working out quite well, if not in the way it was intended for. It's my left arm that's playing up so I can use my trackball as normal to aim, look around and shoot. Then I've been using the left thumbstick instead of the wasd keys, holding the controller in a much more comfortable position than stretching out to use the keyboard.

Cheers for the advice.

Yep, I've been using a trackball for the past eight years. I could never get the hang of using a mouse, though I must admit that was before the cordless versions came out.

I just completed FEAR with this hybrid system, had a few sticky places, mainly due to there no being enough buttons to map key controls to and FEAR has a lot of keys. Ah well who needs to lean around corners?

Now why can't they make controllers with trackballs instead of the thumbsticks? Seems like it would give a lot more precise and faster control.

I done this with a Old X-box pad.
Now that's an idea, let's design/build a trackball controller.

The reason why trackballs aren't used on controllers is the same reason why the touch-sensitive pad on the iPod isn't used in other players: they are awkward to use, and sometimes a little cumbersome. I can't imagine going for headshots with a trackball, as can't most people. Though, it has never been tried before on a controller... It could work... Eh. You never know.

Those little trackballs you got built into some keyboards might of been cumbersome but a decent trackball is so easy to control.

First one I bought was a Logitech Trackman Marble + and I still use it on my W98 machine. Before I bought that I had so much trouble with the mouse I used a Dual Strike, played through most of Half Life with one of them but it went to a charity shop once I bought a trackball. Pity I could use one now.

Now this unholy love child does look cumbersome. But this is a thing of beauty, damn if only I had a credit card.
