Why do people buy Alienware?

I really don't understand it, the prices are astounding and the parts are very much subpar and are worth far less than the stated price.

Yet people buy them, even though the components are listed directly in front of them, it boggles my mind.

hey hey hey, now Apple has indeed SOME nice products. Like their screens, at least in the past.

Alienware has nice products too. They are just overpriced.

People are interested in purchasing the brand, not the actual item.

Complete product(people don't like assembling things and trying to work out what parts to get). Build quality(or implied quality). Brand awareness(proven by the fact you posted this thread). Status symbol.

Lack of knowledge, laziness, an urge for cool design and brand recognition.

Good customer service, also Makta called me bad names again. :V

To clarify I had an Alienware laptop back when gaming laptops were still rare. She was a beaut for a good few years and then the coolant died.

I actually looked into Alienware when I was shopping for computers last September/October. Alienware machines are somewhat better for gaming than your typical Dell without being quite as expensive as the semi-custom shops like Falcon NW.

I ended up building my own, but I briefly considered an Alienware.

What is this I don't even

If you had a sig with a full baloon I would pop it.

as far as concept artists go, they swear on Apple screens because they show you the true colours. Dont nail me on it though! Its just what I have heard from watching people like Feng Zhu streaming. And thats HIS opinion. But since he is a professional I do think it has SOME value. Its not that he says other screens are garbage, as he has several PCs and screens at home that he is using, but he says that his apple screen is the best one, as far as the quality of the colours goes.

But most of their products are overhyped garbage, so much for sure.

Yeah, that's all crap. Artists get Apple computers because Apple offers a completed product made for the everyman consumer, not a high-quality rig. Apple doesn't offer ANY particularly special screens in their products (in fact, NONE of them are special at all) that another brand can't do better. It really all just comes down to the popular trends, which digital artists are easily wrapped up in. Many of them delude themselves into believing there are profound reasons as to their purchases, like your Feng Zhu, and almost any 360 owner, but that's all it is; made-up nonsense. They bought a product because that's what they wanted. Simple as that.

Nothing really wrong with that, you do the same when you get a contractor to renovate your house or a mechanic to work on your car. Your money is going towards employing the expertise of someone else so you don't have to become an expert.
I was about to say the same thing, only the analogy I was thinking of was paying an accountant to do your taxes for you, instead of studying basic accounting and doing it yourself.

It's just him drinking the cool-aid.

Now more than ever, all the hardware and drivers offer no perceivable different from any run of the mill pc or laptop you can assemble yourself.

Hell, around 2002-2003, I used to buy Radeon 9700s for computers, solder a little line & voila, you had a Radeon 9700 "For Mac" which was sold in the stores for 60% markup. I'd sell it for 25% mark-up. ;)

It's all the same shit. So if you want reasons to buy Macs, you can best say stuff like "styling" or "ease of use". At least that's debatable & not delusional. ;)

Actually, no. Eizo screens are the shit when it comes to color fidelity, particularly the ColorEdge series.

Apple used to have a wider RGB gamut on their screens a long, long time ago. Since then, other companies have developed color systems superior to Apple RGB: sRGB, Adobe wgRGB, scRGB.

To the point, though. You don't really need "true colors" when doing concept art, as your end product still will probably be seen on a shitty TN LCD monitor. Moreover, the 3D modelers and texture artists that work based on a concept will rarely have hi-def screens. A minor color intensity is completely irrelevant for concept design. For illustration that is made to be printed, it's a bit of a different story, and depends largely on what printer is used.

yeah well, I like the work flow on my mac book so much for sure. As far as screens goes, I never bought really any expensive screen so I can not really compare them, just the things I know from people that work in that field. But yeah, despite that I am using a Mac, I am not really happy about the hardware inside it, its shit. But I also blame our school, which probably looked for the worst mac book they could find, and doubled it ... the new class gets Mac Book pro now ... isnt life nice?

Meh. Why cant apple finally die?

As I work with concept art myself and recently purchased a new monitor for both me and my mother (who does photography) I read up on a lot of that stuff and looked into why people in the business prefer Apple. I couldn't find one single reason with substantial arguments, other than "it's the business standard" and "Apple has better colors". But as Wooz said, that doesn't mean shit unless all your clients and everyone you ever show your art to will look at it on a monitor with the same colors.

Pfft high end CRT monitors wipe the floor in the true colour department.
Old skool is the best school.

Just a bugger to find nowadays.

I still have my CRT monitors, one in the shed and 2 in my study...10+ years and they still look great.

Apple makes nice monitors but they're often overpriced and cheaper brands such as Dell or Asus often sell cheaper just as good monitors.
