worst and well optimized games

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
I think in today's games the creators don't make much effort in making the code fast enough. They think everyone has a NASA-computer and it will work perfectly... or if not then smiply buy a new comp. So what do you think are the best and worst optimized games. You may even go back in time...

My votes:

Best optimized: Tied, Max Payne 2 and GTA: Vice City. These two games both amaze me with how well they run. Smooth, high FPS, very graphically detailed and neither ever gave me any problems. I tied them because while MP2 is graphically superior to VC, VC is a huge, huge game that ran without a hitch on a Geforce 2MX card.

Worst optimized: Morrowind. Even in 800x600 with every graphics option turned to its lowest setting this game was a mess - constant stuttering, single digit frames per second, load times of 60+ seconds while moving between maps and sometimes even while on the same map. Granted, they had to make it a certain way to make it as moddable as it is, but it's incredible how poorly this game runs on any and every system it's played on.

I felt Command and Conquer generals was one of the bigger leaps on system requirements I've seen. In general EA sucks.

I've found that most Bethesda titles are poorly optimized. Magic & Mayhem, for example, runs terribly on my PC and it's not even a newer title.

As for the best optimized, although they're not exactly a game unto itself, most console and arcade emulators run extremely well on a lower-end PC. When you take into consideration that it is an emulator, I'm surprised that they can be run with such low requirements.

i can agree that GTA ran pretty good in singleplayer - however the netcode was horrible as far as i remember, even with 100mbit lan and the gigahertzy machines of today it still feels "un-smooth".

one game that didn't run well at all was ultima 8 - pagan. ooh, that was a craving game! :)

MTA is just a hack, so it's pretty amazing that it runs at all. From what I've read it can't even tell if you actually hit someone (either with bullets or a car) - it just plays the animation regardless. It's not officially part of the game or supported by Rockstar, so I can't hold it against the game.

For those who have the PC versions of GTA3 or GTA:VC and don't know about this, go to: http://mtavc.com/

Amazing effort, poor execution. I'll wait for Rockstar North's "Crime Online". I'm just surprised it even runs, considering the amount of code that needs to be transferred.

Max Payne runs really well on my PC, but I get some graphic glitches with GTA that the patch doesn't fix. I think it's because I use a laptop, and the hardware isn't completely compatible with the uber graphics cards, even though it has the same specs.

I play mostly older games, there just isn't much I'm interested in that's come out recently (besides has anyone had problems running Fallout and StarCraft). That should change soon though, all these great CRPG's in developement lately.

oh, that's a very probable explanation to why multiplayer was so sloppy then. too bad it wasn't a part of the game full out. imagine that =)

Lets see.. Neverwinter nights requires I think it is 1Ghz and the graphics are amazing when you zoom in in my opinion.

Worst has to be Homeworld I have more than that game requires still it laggs when I zoom in, could be cause I zoom in on the intercepter fights(note: 5 ships per interceptor unit and about 12 units). Very nice game too bad it laggs and has crap gameplay.
