I'm an atheist, so I don't believe Satan exists. But while I was writing that I thought of a quote from "The usual suspects" and decided to put that in my sig. It's a great movie, so rent it sometimes if you haven't seen it yet.

Something that most people don't realize about the concept of Satan within theology is that satan does not actually *cause* sin or evil. In fact, how he was even paralleled with evil is an odd question. Satan only challenged God's authority and was sent to hell. His only real goal is to challenge God's authority, not draw humans into sin, that isn't a challenge to God's authority, it is simply breaking the rules.

Satan was not the snake in the garden of Eden, there is no textual proof of this. In fact, he is never mentioned to cause sin. Humans simply sin and that's that.

Even more, the theory that Satan causes evil is actually an attempt to explain why God (being good and forgiving) allows evil things to happen. I think Satan can exist and probably does, and I pity him - to have your name pinned to a sin, to be associated with the worst. He is probably finishing his 'sentence' in hell or purgatory by that time.
