Ahhh, poor Dead Island. Did you play the first day it came out? I heard they released a bugtastic developer's version originally and patched it the next day. I picked it up a very days later, so got to miss out on all that fun stuff. Probably would've hated playing by myself, but it's pretty fun in coop, especially when you start running over friends with vehicles or blowing them up with propane tanks.
Definitely not GOTY material, but a nice coop distraction.

So you're the guy running laps at Monza in reverse in GTR2? I hate you!

Only game I was looking forward to (saints row 3) is rather disappointing. So I guess the best game of the year for me is Mass Effects 1 and 2, which I got in the summer.

Why is that?! I mean I haven't played the game yet but I have heard only good things about it so far.

You can't replay missions, the beginning is really bad, and it is really, really juvenile and sexist

I played more through it today though, and it is definitely better than first impressions had me belive. It isn't as good as the first one but is overall better than most games

I personally find the second game to be much more enjoyable compared to the first one.

That's what I meant, I never even played the first one lol

Going about the 2011 releases I've played, none (or so I though). So my vote goes to Frozen Synapse, an awesome tactical game, and thus the only 2011 title I've played (outside New Vegas DLC).

Saints Row The Third really made me want to change my mind regarding my choice for GOTY. But there is still one more game I will be playing before the year finally comes to an end:

No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise

8-)

The Games I had the most fun with this year are Serious Sam 3 and Saints Row 3.

DX:HR ranks pretty high but the fact that it pretty much forces you to be a pacifist (less exp for killing, no stealth bonuses even though you hid all the bodies and used a silencer) fails to make it a worthy sequel to the original Deus Ex for me. Not saying it's not a good game but that's the deal breaker for me right there.

Pains me to say it, but yeah. I still liked the C&C, thought it was a very good sequel, but holy fuck did the experience system irk me for so solidly favoring a certain type of gameplay. At one point, my hussie was like, "So, you just sneak up to people and press a button? That doesn't seem very fun." Gotta agree. I need to just play without giving a fuck about the XP.

I dunno, I've started a playthrough of DXHR without sticking to the stealth/pacifist route too much, and haven't noticed all that much difference. The game definitely isn't designed to be played as a straight-up shooter - you just die too fast - but I haven't noticed being weaker than in the pacifist playthrough. Maybe the decision to keep hacking skills netted me enough XP to stay that way.

That's the thing for me - sneaking is pretty easy in the game with the radar. So why reward the player for taking the easier route? I would have preferred a system where you gained more experience one way or another depending on the situation. You wanna kill the mercenaries that are hunting you down? Good - you should thin their ranks. You want to kill the thugs in Detroit although you're asked not to? Less XP for you. Or an even the tried and true system of exterminating individual enemies in any fashion you wanted without penalty. Give extra XP for completing the side quests if they called for killing, incapacitation or/and non-detection.
But whatevs - I didn't play this game for the combat anyway and as you said, you get more than enough XP otherwise. It's not really game breaking for me; my preferences would have just been different in a developer's shoes.
