Your thoughts regarding TOEE?

Look, Ma! Two Heads!
Hey, folks, I am interested in acquiring The Temple Of Elemental Evil. I've always seen references to it, but never got interested, until recently. Before I put my hands on it, though, I want to know what are your opinions about this game, since our taste for games is (in most cases) somewhat alike. Do you think it's worthwhile?

Yeah. As you may have already heard grab the last official patch etc. and if you want to, get the unofficial patches too. I don't like to play with unofficial patches, but I had no problems playing it with just the official one.

As for the game itself, it's an excellent dungeon crawler, very short though, and it's the last RPG with good combat.

Being a dungeon crawler, though, the story and the choice & consequences are almost lacking, so keep that in mind too.

Awfully bugged game. I never got it to run properly. There's a copy laying around here somewhere. Tell you what: if you can find it, you can keep it, okay?

Massively underrated game.
It's worth playing with the CO8 mod (Circle of Eight), and even if you don't want to play with that mod's changes it allows you to choose regular TOEE but WITH the mod's fixes.

I don't give a shit about TOEE not being a story centric RPG, it goes back to the best RPGs of all time, the SSI Goldbox games that were always about supreme tactics, hard as nails combat and tons of numbers.

TOEE isn't an easy game, but there's a lot to chew, and there's bunches of replabality thanks to how flexible Troika managed to make the combat system in regards to the D&D backbone.

To be entirely honest, I enjoyed TOEE more than Planescape: Torment or at times even Fallout, it just takes me back to the time when I used to play RPGs that had their content restricted by the byte, so in order to create an elaborate gameplay experience they just made it as detailed as possible.

Very decent game, like the poster above me said, hella buggy, Grab a patch otherwise you won't be able to loot from corpses. Gary gygax had a say in some of this, so for a true blue dnd experience(other than previous tsr iterations) this is a recommendation from me.

It shows that turnbased D&D combat can be so very, very good and fun on PC.
And the game itself could be so much more... fuck you Atari.

ToEE is a total pain in the ass, unless you're a hardcore D&D fan.

don't get me wrong, the game in itself is not bad, but i think many will stop playing before they finish the game. also, the game allows you to go to 'difficult' areas straight from the get-go, which is an easy way to get your ass handed to you. :)
this is a game that takes time to get to know, then level up and only then you can even consider tackling the serious stuff.

True, I played it twice and had my ass kicked pretty soon in the game. Maybe because I went on the lowest level on about sixth level. Game for advanced players only, IMO, but it can be entertaining to novices as well. Providing you spend a lot of time to chew through the rules, classes etc.

I have run the TOEE a few times for my real life D&D party, and the campaign is famous for being brutally difficult. I didn't realize they had made a PC version of it.

ToEE. Ahhh. Picked this up at my local Hastings for $15. As stated before. Buggy. Kinda slow, and kinda short.
It was okay but far too easy and short.
I am not sure about the true D&D ToEE, but if someone could direct me to a site that's not wiki about the true D&D ToEE that'd be great.

Thanks for your answers. I decided I'll buy the game, though I do not usually enjoy hack'n slash/dungeon crawler games (that is the impression you gave me). I hope that at least it has a well written story.
Also, thanks for the advices.

Um, no, it doesn't have a well written story. It's all about killing monsters. But damn me if killing monsters with nicely implemented turn-based D&D combat isn't good.

I enjoyed TOEE. I think its worth playing.

With that said, Its a dungeon crawl without much of a story. I also felt it was far too short and, unlike a few others here, I didn't think it was very difficult at all.

There were a couple battles that I had to replay, but that was about it. I also don't think I would call it an excellent example of tactical turn based combat.

Its a fun little game, but it felt a bit more like a budget title than full, "feature length" game.

I recently bought ToEE on the cheap, and I love it.

The turn-based combat is excellent. It's very hard until you get used to it, though, especially if you've been conditioned to dumbed-down NWN arcade game combat.

Most of the qualms about ToEE are correct. It's buggy, short, and lacks a compelling story. Still, the first time through I was on the edge of my seat wondering what might be around every corner. The second time through I was surprised by how replayable it was. Since you select a party alignment at the start of the game, various story options may be available or hidden from the outset.

ToEE is a bittersweet experience, though. Not only could it have been a fabulous success if it had had the time and polish it deserved, but it gives a fleeting glimpse - the merest hint - at what a brand new, state-of-the-art, isometric CRPG could be like.

By the way, the modders over at Circle of Eight have done a fabulous job so far. If you get ToEE you really must check them out.

The only problem with this game is having to do all the quests in town before you move on with the game. If you don't, then those [spoiler:34fd7c4b64]giant frogs[/spoiler:34fd7c4b64] ARE going to get you.

I tried to play through it a 2nd time, but the town put me to sleep.. and you can't skip the town, so I had to quit, despite wanting to play through the new content added by modifications. >.<
