Dumb thought about miniguns...

Let me think here.....miniguns.... MINI is usually used with a word to describe how it is smaller than something else. Minivan for an example. So...this what I want to know....if a MINIgun is indeed mini....what does a regular gun look like? Hehehehe. Or a big gun :-P for that matter..... If there is no such thing....then why call it a minigun? Why not use some other name? Is there actually any logic to it's name?

Well...

If you look at a modern cannon or a tank-mounted machinegun or those guns stuck on the sides of a fighter jet, yeah, that gun's pretty mini.

OH yeah....I JUST now finished watching The Predetor. Now.....somewhere on the message boards there was a discussion about miniguns. Some said that you can't just carry them around and shoot things up like you can in Fallout. I agree that they would be hard to find in real life but that doesn't mean you *wouldn't* be able to carry one around. In the movie, Jessie "the body" Ventura carried around a minigun blowing the shiznit out of other people. That is, until he was wasted himself, hehehe. My point is, I know it was a movie, but it looks as though it wouldn't be that hard to tote around a minigun wherever you went. Granted you'd be hard pressed to find one, but still....it IS realistic.....

I don't know why I brought this up...I guess I just...ah fuck it....

A minigun is most commonly found on gunships, helicopters, etc. Using it as a hand-held weapon is very, very rare. And when you compare the minigun to other vehicle-mounted weapons (deckguns, howitzers, rocket launchers, etc.) it is rather small

Easy way around that, make all miniguns weight a LOT and make them require STR10.

And it's such a simple mod even you could make it. All you have to do is change 2 hex locations in 4 files (laser, normal, avenger, vindicator).

Not that hard, and it would take you maybe an hour at most.

One thing i think is stupid about miniguns in fo/fo2 is that your char holds it right over his/her reproductive organs! Ouchies if the minigun fires!

Well, inform me if im banned.

Meanwhile Arnold beats the shit outa him with a bow and arrow and a rock? If you ask me Mr. Venture needs to sit his ass down in his Goveners chair untill he learns how to handle a minigun. All he needs to do is watch Terminator 2 and see Arnold smoke the LAPD using a minigun. (Now thats quality entertainment boys!)

I think the main problem is not carrying the thing, but avoiding being blown 30 feet back by the recoil of the blast...

That's why you make it require strength 10. And the recoil isn't measure in feet, but in pounds (I think).

Actually

I remember hearing somewhere, I don't remember where so don't ask, that miniguns don't have recoil. Considering the high rate of fire, that would have to be true to maintain any accuracy. Maybe I'm thinking of Gatling guns, though.

Gatling guns are mounted like a cannon and are fired by cranking a handle. They were anti-infantry weapons at the turn of the 20th century.

But then again they're usually attached to pivots.

Realistically, it would be impossible to carry, let alone aim and fire a minigun. The "Avenger" minigun in Fallout 2 in reality is actually an anti-tank minigun that fires, get this, about 58 rounds per SECOND of 30mm rounds (that's approximately 1.5 inches for those who don't know). The gun weighs 281 kg (619 pounds) a far cry from the weight of the Fallout Avenger minigun which weighs in at a hefty 31 pounds. Of course Fallout's "minigun" only has 5mm rounds when compared to the 30mm rounds of the real ones. It is still unrealistic and the Fallout minigun would need to be made of alluminum to ever weigh only 30 pounds (my MONITOR weighs more).

Hmm, but wouldn't a 30 mm round leave nothing more than a puddle of blood when fired at a human? If so, then Fallout should have made them exclusive to robots and turrets. I think that would be better. And then you could still use the vulcan or GE handheld minigun.

RE: The truth of Fallout Miniguns

But the fallout miniguns aren't those you find on ships and fighters. They are "personal miniguns". Say somewhere in the future some gun company decided to make a minigun for personal use.

Even old WWII machine guns are unwieldly to use, and they do not feature multiple barrels. The miniguns in Fallout weigh only a measly 40 or so pounds which is VERY unrealistic. Guns with multiple barrels are very heavy, even if it were made of aluminum, which they are not.

Personal miniguns simply do not exist outside of games. Miniguns fire over 4000 rounds per minute which equates to over 60 rounds per second. They are used to mow down flanks of infantry, tanks, and other aircraft. The kick is tremendous which is why they are mounted. Miniguns are also hooked up to external electrical sources because of the power needed to power the motors, firing pins, and ammunition loaders.

Last, miniguns are not a good choice because there are better alternatives like assault rifles. They are lighter, they have ammunition that can pierce armor like minigun ammot, they waste less ammunition, and quite frankly, you don't need that much firepower.

RE: The truth of Fallout Miniguns

Yes, but i think it's realistic, keeping in with the rest of the future world (pre-nukes).

They had already developed the power armor, which increased the strength of the soldiers tremendously, so they wanted to make some big guns that could fully utilize that extra strength. They probably NEEDED personal miniguns when the Chinese brought in their heavy stuff. Not for every footsoldier, of course, but as support weapons.

And i don't see why miniguns can't pierce armor as well as assault rifles, please tell me? I think every bullet is even more powerful than an assault rifle shot. In FO they toned down the damage of the minigun for balance, you know.

However the miniguns in Fallout *are* unrealistic. They weigh only *40 pounds*. How do you miniaturize *real* miniguns, which weigh around 600 pounds into a gun that weighs only 40?

Also, the only reason miniguns have multi-barrels is because they fire at SUCH a tremendous rate that the barrels overheat. I am talking about firing over 4000 rounds per minute, that's 60 rounds per SECOND. They are meant to be attached to attack helicopters.

They are also not meant to be burst weapons. They spin up to speed and then fire to get maximum firing speed. To burst would require speed-up and slow-down. Not good for combat situations where you're planning on being anything other than a (non)walking turret.

They can, but due to the fact that they fire at extremely high speeds, the gun can simply pulverize the target to bits.

Assault rifles are used like sniper rifles with advanced bullets like 7.68 mm (not sure if that is the one), that are also found in sniper rifles. It is very expensive to waste such ammo in a minigun unless it is on an Apache helicopter designed to take out tanks.
