Fallout 3 - Review (2008 - X360)

Yep, basically agree on all points. I assume you've probably read my own Fallout 3 thing so I won't shill here, but yeah, seems a lot of people are having fun tearing Fallout 3 apart again recently :D

Probably for the same reason I'm writing my own retrospective on the game now, also 8 years later; because I want to.
Shame there was little to nothing reviews like this back in 2008 even though this particular is a bit too angry.

In my case it's not a review, it's a retrospective. And there were negative reviews at the time, but remember also that New Vegas wasn't released at that point, and that game basically showed up Bethesda in a whole bunch of different ways, potentially opening some people's eyes who might have thought 3 was decent enough at the time, until they found out how much better it might've been.

Why did he waited for like 8 years to write this?
Because I'm currently 15. When Fallout 3 was released, I was only 8. I only picked up Fallout 3 late last year.

I actually haven't read your thing yet, though I've been meaning to for a long time.

Nice review, I got my own review of F3 planned sometime in the near future (On My YT channel).
I think I'm the only one with a "Meh" reaction to it.

Can't you hear the screams of the Bethesda fanboys? Their favorite video game just got dissed. They're all crying and strapping on their Fallout 4 Pipboys and putting in their Vault Suits, getting their toy nerd guns.

Even as someone who has for years been against 3, I will say as a game on itself it isn't great. It works, but it doesn't go past working, and I personally think there are more broken games out there, such as Fallout 4. Also I've never thought that fighting flame with flame was a good idea. Honestly the review isn't much of a review but more of a "This sucks, blah blah, me complaining about a facet while not giving much context, blah, blah, why does X happen. Ass Cancer." Why does it look bad?

Why is the story bad? He just says it's boring and bad, and goes through a rushed retelling of it instead of anything that says why.

I'll tell you what I think, I think it's bad because there isn't much weight added to a lot of things. A lot of your choices feel like you don't have meaning, and you feel more like a... courier... I crack myself up... rather than some vault dwelling savior. A lot of the weight is based on the atmosphere. Bethesda bet everything on atmosphere rather than sound, logical storytelling. It definitely gets that post-apoc vibe. Even not blowing up, or blowing up megaton isn't given much feeling. In New Vegas, if we do something that changes the layout of the land, we get subtleties that show us how it effects others, people say some things to us, quests go different (You can outright solve one quest perfectly by killing Caesar, and it's basically completely unrelated.)

Gameplay wise, ehh I agree and disagree. I think Fallout 3 plays fine, but just is boring. Voice acting is pretty bad I'll say. Visually I couldn't give a damn and Replay Value is OK, but a lot of the choices don't mean anything, and I only really liked them in the Pitt and Moira's quest, so I'll give him that.

The game looks bad... because it looks bad. I explained that the technical fidelity is really bad, but the art style itself is best summed up as "gray."

The retelling of the story is meant to explain why the story is bad. I did try and sum up why it was bad, though;

"This story is garbage. It’s not easily conveyed through words, but if you listen to some of this writing (combined with the knowledge that there is no way to go against the Brotherhood) you’ll immediately see what the problem is. And this is just the main quest. The side quests that are here are just as poorly written..."

I also tried to allude to it within the summary itself, but perhaps I didn't do as good of a job as I could've.

Also, what quest gets solved by killing Caesar? I don't remember that one.
