Nostalgic and Suprised!

Zeal

Still Mildly Glowing
I remember the day I bought F1. I had just arrived from a party weekend with friends. I remembered that I passed all weekend thinking about Fallout because we departed Friday morning and that was the day Fallout was released in Portugal. Oh, happy days… Those were happy days when I played Fallout for the first time. I remember I even had to buy water from the merchants because time was running out, so young I was… I also remember the first week of this site, and in spite of watching it grow in the shadow (I’ve posted for the first time here last month) I always accompanied its progress. At least once a week I checked it to see some news and other fans ideas from the forums. So I really want to thank Bio and all the others that make this site the best one related Fallout.

I really don’t understand why Interplay would do something like this but they’ve done it and this time I’m not going to suffer no more. I ain´t gonna count the days no more, with hope for a F3 that ain´t gonna come. Interplay is going down and will take F3 to the grave with them (I don’t know if u realized yet but they hate fans…). Damm, I was even going to offer my help of technical biomechanical questions, like the implants in VC. I was going to learn HTML so I could build a webpage dedicated to Fallout in Portuguese to celebrate. Now all is lost…

After three tears from F3 had fallen from my face I became nostalgic. I heard “Maybe” and then inserted the F1 CD to remember good times. But I found something unexpected, something that in all that sorrow made me smile. I found a small directory named “Goodies”. Inside it there was an old screensaver and a file named “main” that according to the “readme” file it is a prototype game of Fallout. But I’m unable to run it! Why? I’ve Windows XP, is it because of that?? And what’s the game like. Does anyone have played it? Can someone please help me?

The “readme” says this:

“Here are some goodies for you. The first is a Fallout screen saver,
named FALLOUT.SCR. Just copy this file into your Windows directory,
and use the Display Control Panel to set your screen saver to Fallout.
Of course, this screen saver requires Win95.

The second is the original prototype version of Fallout. It was written
in 1994 as a test for an isometric, hex-based engine. Just run MAIN.EXE
to see the game. You can paint the scenery and move the knight around
with the mouse. Just press Quit to end the prototype. Wow, Fallout has
come a LONG way, eh?

Enjoy.

The Fallout Team.
September 1997.”

I think I bought the game before Sep of 1997, so how can this be?? Oh well, another X-File… Like the UFO one taht Bio made us all search through the night in vain... :P

Thank you all.

"So I really want to thank Bio and all the others that make this site the best one related Fallout.. "

I meant Brio and I haven’t forgotten about Miro too.

Can someone help me please, I really need to know!

Thx

Olá Zeal!

Tens de usar algo como o DOSBox (não tenho o link aqui, bolas) porque esse protótipo é apenas para DOS. Ou então um computador antigo, sem XP.

Tell me the what size does it have, we`ll host it for everyone to have it if that`s possible (screw Interplay rights to it).

And we'll torture Interplay to sell the rights to Troika and if they don't we'll publish the main.exe file

Tu também és Português? Não acredito! E só agora é que dizes? Inda vá lá, e eu a pensar que era o único “Fallout Junkie” PT. Agora só faltava dizeres-me que o Miro também é PT… Fico contente por saber que não estou sozinho.

It’s real small compared to today’s files. Only 168 Kb!! I’m with you Brio. Tell me what to do! Oh but I still need help. I went to http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1 but I’m confused. Which one should I download? Could you assist me? Thx

Hehe. This is funny: these goodies and this main.exe thing is on my Fallout cd as well, but I can't run it either. The screensaver works fine, but the old game that is mentioned in the read-me-file doesn't work... Never knew that directory was there in the first place. If someone figures out how to make it work, please tell me, I'd like to check it out too.

Use DosBox to run it.

Download DosBox at http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1, pick your operating system (Windows is halfway down).

Dosbox can be a bit disconcerting the first time you use it, particularly if its been a while since you've used Dos.
The way I did it was:

1 - Copied the goodies directory on to my harddrive, at the root (as in C:\Goodies). Then I copied "dos4gw.exe" from the Fallout CD into the same directory (I got an error saying that this file needed to be present).

2 - Installed Dosbox, then ran it (it's under Programs in the Start menu). Type "Intro" to get some details on Dosbox. I mounted the directory I created before as the C drive. (type "mount c C:\goodies", if your main harddrive is C). Then switched over to the C drive (type "C:") and just type "Main".

3 - It didn't respond right away, just gave me a black screen and a mouse cursor (you may have to click inside the screen to get the cursor to appear). After about a minute, it loaded. I don't know why. It could be just me, or something I did wrong. After it started, though, it worked fine.

The controls are a bit funky compared to Fallout. When you click to move, you can't move the cursor until the little guy finishes moving to the square you clicked. You can paint tiles and scenery by clicking the little buttons, picking what you want to paint, and just clicking around. Right-click to get your movement cursor back.

'ESC' key or click 'Quit' to exit the program, and type "Exit" in Dosbox to close it down (and get your mouse back).

Hope that helps.

Que estranho. Ta cheio de portuga aqui.

Fallout 3? Sai dessa... A interplay ta indo pro buraco. Agora depois do fOBOSta é que vai mesmo. So espero que eles liberem o código fonte do 3. Vi uns screenshots. Legal. Também falaram que ele tá 85% concluido.
