Time for a NEW TV

Duckman

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
Alrighty, I have been wondering for a while whether or not to upgrade my old standard definition TV, to a HDTV. There have been a few different options for me personally, but it all comes down to cost. I want to spend less that AU$1000, but have a decent TV that supports 1080p (if possible at that price), for as good resolution as I can get.

But, my main question was if there would be any loss in me getting an old CRT TV that is HD capable, with the RGB inputs (HDMI, maybe, but no loss if it's not there). I know that CRT's have a much better refresh rate and colours are more vivid, but I am not sure if it is worth investing in the last of "yesteryear's technology".

I don't care about space, I have plenty of it, but I am not sure whether to fork out the big bucks for a decent LCD, or buy a cheaper CRT, that was top of the line at the time of it's manufacture.

I wouldn't go 1080p for less than a thousand dollars... Go 720p, it'll be much better quality at that pricerange. Also, go for real brands like LG and Samsung. Quality is MUCH better. I'd say somewhere around 26" for AU$1000. If you want a big 1080p, you'd need to cash out around AU$3500.

Yeah that's right. Either way, it will look OK, but I can't afford something that expensive as of yet.

Unless I save up for a year, but I am saving for a house too :P

If you're saving for a fucking house I have a feeling a TV wouldn't be much of a problem...

Worth saving though, I spent a few bucks extra on my 720p HD projector and I'm quite pleased with it. But as I wrote earlier, 720p is perfectly fine, unless you're getting a gigantor 50" plasma.

Yeah I guess so. Let me find that thread again, andI'll take a look into it.

But if I were to get a TV, rather than a projector, would it be worth getting an LCD, or and older HD CRT TV?

I don't know, but I've heard HD CRT is crap. If you want HD, go for LCD. There are several very good LCD TVs in your pricerange, check it out.

I have already heard that CRT HD is crap, but then others give me the impression there is little definition lost. So I am not sure. LCDs do look nicer, and save space, but I don't care for the "look" of the TV or the bulkiness.

Eh, I'll have to take my 360 to a few different stores and test the thing out to give me the best idea of what the TVs are capable of.

I actually have an HD CRT from Samsung -they are the best makers of HD CRTs and it gives an excellent, excellent picture. Stay away from LG, everything I've ever touched that they made has fallen to pieces -I see no need to get involved with a firm whose cell phones cannot take a single drop while my Nokia has been launched down the steps to the hardwood at the bottom without skipping a beat. The Samsung TV is just tops IMHO. I hear that DLP is very good, though, and if you find one a quality 3-tube front projector is still the absolute best option in the world for a television of any kind -they are, though, as they always were, costly.

About projectors. In your price range, I wouldn't really bother getting DLP. Up to certain price, LCD projectors are better. Also, some people see a "rainbow effect" with DLP projectors. I did, so I got LCD instead. If you have tons of money though, then go ahead and get a DLP projector, but be prepared to spend $4000+.

HD ready? Which means that it is ready for a signal in HD or something?

Sorry, I don't understand why it would be HD ready, or just HD integrated.

The thing to beware of with LCD projectors is the absolutely insane cost of bulbs -like %40 or more of the unit cost. They last very few hours. The companies could give the projectors away if they could make you buy a frikkin' light bulb for USD400 each time.

Actually, that's not true. I've had my projector for a good year now, and the lamp is still holding strong. It all comes down to what lamp mode you use; if you can make the room pitch black there's no point to use anything above the "low" setting. Also, you need to remember to clean the filter. A new lamp is like US$450 or something, not a disaster.

my suggestion would be to buy a traditional tube TV with HD capabilty - if you have the room for it ...

since .. its cheaper
it has better contrast and black then any LCD
some ultraslim models actually are pretty slim
it will hold better in time then a plasma and not become obsolete by advances in image quality like with LCDs

the definition is not as good as with an LCD tho

i for one never had any trouble with tube tvs - i have one that is circa 17 years old or so and the image is still good ...

its a technology that has had all its kinks worked out .. it may be dying but its tested :D and it works

Radnan, that's what I was thinking about when I was considering either a CRT or LCD. I know that these tube TVs will last forever, hell, my parents have one they bought almost 20 years ago, and it still works well for what they need (ie, no HD etc).

But it is something worth tossing up.

Looking at the following LCD TV to buy:

http://www.samsung.com/au/products/tv/lcdtv/la32s81bd.asp

It says that the vertical frequency is 50hz, but is that referring to the refresh rate, because I need at least 60hz for the Xbox 360, well most games anyway. The guy at the store assured me it was 60hz, but we all know how wonderfully helpful they are at times.

What do you reckon?

(BTW, I can get it for AU$1250, AU$250 off the original price)
